As Utah comes up on the schedule our Rockets are making a late push for the playoffs. It would be nice to get this young team some playoff experience and also create some momentum going into next year. That said, the presence of the Father of Jazz hoops (with apologies to Frank Layden) gives me pause.I know we have a thread about Rick probably not coming back, but I want to talk specifically about Jerry Sloan.
While I have abhorred the Jazz for many years, all of IT - the whiny fans, Larry Miller (RIP), the players and their dirty tactics/whiny dispositions, etc......ironically enough I have always had a grudging respect for Jerry Sloan. Now, Jerry coaches his players to play the way he used to...tough, disciplined, hardnosed...good defense, precision cuts, and ...dirty/questionable play. Sloan is a guy that can get a team over the top or take them and build a culture, putting his stamp on a young team/organization. I, above all want the Rockets to be stable and in the most competent hands.
There has been conflicting news as to Sloan's status and I know this sounds a bit like making a deal with the devil. But in my mind he would be the ideal guy. Could you all get your minds around him as the next head coach?

My feeling is that he'd retire. I can't see him coaching another team, unless it was a situation where he's coaching a contender with vets.

How about giving Elston Turner a chance?

You should be banned permanently for even suggesting such a moronic thing.

If I ever saw Jerry Sloan on the Rockets sideline as the coach I would puke my guts out and fling at the television.

How can you abhor all these things about the Jazz and respect the man who created that environment??

If that's the type of culture he brings, I want no part of it.

I would love to see us adopt elements of Utah's offense. They're very tough to defend.

But not at the cost of hiring Jerry Sloan.

For what it's worth, Karl Malone has said that he feels Sloan has retired for good.

    ^This.

If you don't hate Sloan you either are a new Rocket fan or not really a Rocket fan. I see no other alternative.

    Move this thread.

It makes me disgusted just to see the words "Jerry Sloan" in the GARM.

    It IS somewhat paradoxical.

I'm a Rockets lifer and have seen many seasons pass...so it's ingrained in me to hate the Jazz.
And I know "building a culture" with him could be construed as having ominous implications.
But we're not importing their fans, Stockton, Malone, or even resurrecting Larry Miller.
It's about a GREAT coach bringing us what we need....

I know many will not be able to see past the fierce rivalry and the potential style change.

And I am all about what it means to be a Houston Rocket.

But it is my belief that Sloan would bring W's and a stable hand to guide this young/ talented team. We have flexibilty due to Morey's moves and if Sloan wants to keep coaching I don't think he could find a better situation.

I could not watch or root for the Rockets if Sloan was the coach.

    No. No. Nooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Yes he was a very effective basketball coach for a very long time, but he also ran a dojo of douchebaggery in Salt Lake City for a quarter century.

He turned out two decades worth of flopping, whiny-assed, dirty douchebag players -- each whinier, floppier and douchier than the last -- who degraded the play in the NBA. He taught his players d-bag moves like elbowing their opponents in the throat and then falling down, trying to get a foul; or kicking their opponent in the crotch as they were going up for the shot and attention was focused elsewhere; or whining endlessly to the refs until they were given the benefits of questionable calls just to shut them the hell up.

The fish rots from the head down. He helped make the Jazz the dirtiest team in the league, and consequently helped make the Jazz fans the most obnoxious in the league.

Jerry Sloan was a very capable coach, but aspects of the style of play he taught have been a cancer on the league.

    A thousand times NO!

LOL...Well said!....can't disagree with most of it.

.... do get a sense though that I see him as a much better coach than you do..... could see Les bringing him in over the next 4 -5 years. We need somebody who will command the respect of the players, shepherd us through these times of rebuilding......or have the ability to coach a contender with the best of them...depends on Morey's/Les's timeframe.
