That's what I thought too. Duncan and Robinson were good to give the kid some encouragement. I like that.
No kidding - not sure what those guys were smoking before coming up with that title. You know, no matter how much we call him the Mermaid or how much he was dismantled by Hakeem in '95 and we laugh at it, Robinson has been a class act ever since he came into this league. He and Joe Dumars were 2 of the classiest superstars to play in the NBA during the 80's and 90's.
Jackson will get his... we play the spurs often being in the same division and Ming is going to get better as the season goes along. Too bad you blew your wad in a preseason game Jackson. See ya next time and I hope Ming puts you on your @$$. I have nothing but respect for Duncan and Robinson but all those punks who thing they are the next great thing after a dunk... what ever
That half layup/slash dunk was the highlight of his career. One day soon he will be long forgotten and this will be his 2 minutes of fame.
Jackson is a moron. That is not posterizing Ming. Ming came over late and really didnt give a true effort. The Sportscenter guys were living that up as well. Jackson has to brag now, because once Ming gets the NBA game, Jackson will never get close again.
I know that Ming will be great, but fellas we are gonna need a lot of Cato this year. I really didn't like his debut but I can see some promise in there and besides that's what the pre-season is for acclimation to the league for new-comers.
I saw Steve Jackson in the high school playoffs his junior yr. at Port Arthur Lincoln. They beat my hometown highschool team by a point or two; the game was in Deerpark H/S gym, which is outside of Houston, near Pasadena, Tx, for all you who are not close to Houston geographically. He was just a stiff post man back then. Playing at Oakwood academy did wonders for his game. Or, maybe that was all that team (PA Lincoln) needed. They won state in class 4A that year. I agree though, that dunk was no big deal. Yao wasn't in position to block it anyway, which is something he and coach Rudy T will work on, I'm sure. ~kountzer~
Stephen Jackson has a big head, he'll be firmly nailed to the bench by the start of the season. Robinson and Duncan are class acts, they knew exactly what type of situation Ming was in. If it was possible, I'm sure Rudy would have played him against Phoenix or Orlando, teams with weaker frontlines. Ming will get his chance against a team with a decent but not great frontline to adjust more. I disagree with the title, other then Jackson's comments it was all praise.
DoD said: I agree and dare I say that upon retirement, I believe Robinson would be the ideal big man tutor for Yao Ming.
THANK YOU for pointing that out. Murphy's story had little to do with the headline and he doesn't write the headline. A copy editor (not the actual sports editor but a person who is mainly a proofreader/headline and cutline writer) would have written the headline for this one. So, if you want to BOO anyone, BOO the copy editor who wrote the headline, whoever that may be.
That was a pretty funny quote but I do have one question. Don't you have to be good enough for people to make a poster of you before you can actually posterize someone?
Actually, I looked at the Chronicle website and the complete headline really read: Spurs Aren't Wowed by Yao's Debut San Antonio's Twin Towers able to see potential in Rockets' big man That makes a little more sense.
I thought all these negative stuff will be good for motivating Ming to improve, especially in the begining of his NBA career. You bet, he will watch SportsCenter, read newspapers ...
Just seems kind of dishonest to me, which I know is to be expected. And writers have absolutely no input in the title of the articles that they write? Even if it doesn't accurately reflect what the writer was trying to portray? That sucks. Seems like they would at least run it by him or her to make sure the headline wasn't completely at odds with what the writer's purpose was. I guess that just seemed so illogical I didn't even consider it. Learn something new everyday.

DCkid, I wonder why they didn't just title it "San Antonio's Twin Towers able to see potential in Rockets' big man " ?
Jackson may not even be a Spur by the next time we play the Spurs. If he is, he had better enjoy kicking this puppy because soon -- very soon -- this puppy will be a huge, unfriendly Great Dane (wish the Chinese had a big, big dog so this analogy would fit better).
