From the looks of things, the so-called motion offense, is anything but that. Unless, the definition of motion is "stationary".

The last couple games, I've seen the Rockets go back to the good ole iso. You know, where Mobley or Francis will dribble for 20 secs, then fire a 20 ft jumper off the dribble.

I don't care how new this offense is, or how we have new players (which shouldn't matter, as this is the first year for the new offense). We must use it in the preseason, no matter how bad it looks, if we are going to have any success with it in the regular season.

I get the sick feeling that it's going to be the same old, "We don't have enough practice time, too many injuries, etc."

When Phil Jackson brought in the triangle to LA 3 years ago, did they wait a few years to install it? No...

What are we waiting for exactly?

Last year, I remember people said Rudy said we would have installed a new offense, if not for the injuries. That excuse is running thin now...

For the love of God, let's work on installing any other offense than the iso. I don't care what the excuse is, because it will never justify running isos 90% of the time!

In an Oct. 23 Chronicle article, Rudy was quoted as saying that they're not as far along as he'd like to be what with a community event and something else having taken up practice time and that they're still in "preseason mode," as opposed to getting ready for opening day. Not a good sign. At the same time, that supports the idea that the team's not ready and the players aren't executing the offense, more than the system's flawed.

YES! When I saw Steve and Mobley dribble for 18-20 secs tonight, I reminded me of the same old offense last season. And that is not likeable.

Young players + new offense = patience. The Lakers DID NOT install the triangle right away, just pieces of it. The Lakers didn't adjust to the triangle until about the midway point to late in the first year of its existence. I think people are under the impression that since the Lakers won a championship Phil Jackson's first year it was because of the triangle, but Jackson himself admitted that he expected the Lakers to need at least one season to adjust to the triangle. It just happened that the players adjusted to it after the All-Star break. If it took the world champions over half a year to learn their system, why do people expect the Rockets to have their system down after 6 preseason games while adding new players?

I never expected them to perfect their new offense... If you re-read my post, my main gripe is that they haven't even TRIED it. If you don't try it in preseason, when will you try it?

I even said, "We must use it in the preseason, no matter how bad it looks, if we are going to have any success with it in the regular season."

I know it would look crappy right now. However, I'm not one who believes that preseason basketball is meant to be a beauty contest.

So your saying (kidrock8) the new offence (or elements of it) wasn't used at all in SA? I'm surprised. I didn't get to see the game and the SA radio guys gave me indigestion.

From the last couple of games, I don't think we've really used it at all...

When people say we've had key guys go down, such as Rice, KT, etc. that's even MORE reason to use a 5-man motion. Are we going to run isos with Cato, when Francis and Mobley are on the bench?

I feel the same way. If Rudy had this new offense and installed it, we would be 1 yr ahead in learning it instead of learning it on the go. I would wish when Ming is in , he restricts him to block to block and to ft line. I saw a couple of times where if Ming was on the low block opposite of the ball, if a guard down pick would have been set and let him roll to the front of the rim, it would have been unstoppable. There really isn't a need to have your biggest player 20 ft from the basket setting a pick.Let him roll from block to block and it will open up lanes for the rest of the guys. Also, when he post up, it would be nice to see them throw him the ball.

    Come on.

First let me start by saying Phil Jackson is a wanna be! He didn't invent the triangle, Tex Winter did. Tex Winter

I would love to see Phil Jackson go and try to coach the Warriors. Look who has played for him the last several years. When Jordan left, they were an avg. team.

I am sure this will ruffle some feathers!

A motion offence depends on positioning and knowing where to be. Remember they can run a 2-1-2 or a 2 - 3 zone. It wouldn't be advised because of the range of the shooters in the NBA. There is no way with a large influx of new comers would RT be able to only run it.

The ISO's after last year are going to be a liability. Something will have to change. Even with the ISO's that took place, Cato was able to get in on some action when he trailed to the hoop to follow up with a flush.

How long is training camp? The Motion would have to be phased in.

This might be the worst post I have ever seen in a long time.

First off, Phil is far from a wannabe. Who is he a wannabe of? The 25+ head coaches without a ring? Ok... I don't care who invented the triangle, fact is the Lakers used it in their first year under Phil and Tex Winter.

I don't get what your point is with that quote... Are you saying teams can defense it with a zone? Or are you saying, they can't? You seem to contradict whatever your point was... What wouldn't be advised? A motion offense or a zone? If you're saying zone, then I agree with you, because look at the T-Wolves in the 2nd half of the year. They used a zone in the 1st half of the year, which threw off their opponents. After teams got to see the Min zone, they were able to exploit it. If you're saying that a motion offense shouldn't be advised, then I suggest you just say no to drugs.

Thank you Captain Obvious... Of course it would have to be phased in. I would rather have it phased in during preseason, and parts of regular season, than most of the regular season, or never at all.

I agree....I dont think phil jackson can coach an average talented team, He needed jordan to be a great coach and when jordan retired...so did he. ( No guts)!!!!. So when he see's a team with talent like Shaq and Kobe....Guess what, He is out of retirement.(No Guts)!!! Well...Back to steve so called franchise, Someone needs to remind him that he is a point guard and his job is to distribute the ball, not hold it for 20 secs. If he wants to be a SG then he needs to trade spots with Mobley, I actually saw Mobley last night be unselfish and Pass the ball. Just my two cents guys. Let me know if i am wrong.

    kidrock,

I agree that they need to stick with the new scheme no matter what is happening out there. The only way to learn something new is to use it.

But I dont agree that they have not even tryed..I have watched all the games so far..and they do try the movement offense for stretches...the just didnt run a whole lot of it last nite in particular..
I know you dont want to hear this, but I'm willing to be patient for a little while longer..why cant you? Yao Ming just joined them 4 days ago...and they have admitted to not having enough time to properly work on the new scheme...I'm willing to give them the first month of the season to get totally away from ISOs.

How long are yall willing to wait? Im curious..

Let me ask you this. What did the Bulls win with Doug Collins, before Phil arrived? What did the Lakers win with Del Harris and Kurt Rambis?

Rudy couldn't win with Barkley, Drexler, and Olajuwon. Then he couldn't win with Pippen, Barkley, and Olajuwon. Phil was able to use Pippen to his maximum ability, Rudy didn't. Does that mean Rudy stinks?

Phil is the ultimate coach in being able to get large egos to collectively work together for 1 goal.

He also did what SA couldn't do, win with Dennis Rodman.

Before you start hating on the Lakers, use your head before you make really asanine comments that make you look like you didn't start following basketball until today.

If Phil isn't a good coach. Please tell me who is. Doc Rivers right? He's one of those rare coaches who reach 1st round.

Considering that people said it would be a 5-man offense, I have never seen 5 Rockets moving on the same play. At most we have 3 guys involved in the offense during the preseason. The guy dribbling the ball, the guy running around a screen, and the guy setting the screen. This is far from a motion offense.

Also, what is the point of using iso in the preseason? I don't give a crap if the motion "isn't ready". When will it ever be ready? The Rockets/Rudy T always cry about "there isn't enough preperation time". Last time I checked, all 29 teams have pretty much the same preperation time.

I know Ming is new. But does a 5-man offense revolve around 1 center? If so, then the term 5 man goes out the window.

Every year I'm tired of hearing how the Rockets bad offense and defense is attributed to lack of practice time. After 5+ years of excuses, some results from changes are needed.

Rt is not only installing a new offense he is installing defense also... to get a team of scorers to play D is hard ask the Maves or the Kings. Give Rudy 25 games then jump his ass if you dont see hope.

I am sure the Spurs defensive plan had a lot to do with the Rockets doing some isolation, i.e. they were adjusting to take away the motion cuts and giving the post. They are a well coached defensive team with a huge front line. Why should they run around with little guys out front? They would rather have a team shoot over them. We did and were successful, we were up by 10 and were holding them way down in scoring.

What defense are we installing? The one where we stop the opponent from scoring?

Rudy had 82 games last year...

I'm sure if things go bad after 25 games this year, the excuses will come out of the woodwork.

    It is not "motion offense."

I wish people would stop calling it that. Rudy has said it is not motion. He has said it is an attacking 5-man game, where Francis can decide to just attack immediately. The Triangle is not a motion offense, either.

Motion is more passive than attacking offenses. Motion goes through patterns of passing and moving waiting for a defense mistake or crease. Attacking offenses like Utah's PnR and LA's Triangle force things...they force the defense to pick a lesser of two evils. They allow the offensive players to force the defense to react and they read what to do from that.

Francis is making reads. Sometimes he just takes it himself...maybe too much right now, but it is his read...his call.

If you think it is ISO, it isn't. All you have to do is watch how Cuttino Mobley is utilized to determine that.

Other than last quarter plays where people hold for the last shot, show me once this preseason where Mobley dribbled for 20 seconds. It isn't happening. Francis is dribbling for drives or jumpers by decision, by his read. Maybe his reads aren't good enough, and he should have used other options....but that is Francis's call. Face it, Francis is not Jason Kidd for the good and the bad. He has a better jumper and he can drive to the hole. If Francis wants to dribble and call over a pick, or if Francis wants to juke his man for separation to put up a free 18'er...that is what you call letting Francis develop his GoTo abilities.

Offenses with complex series of passing rarely succeed in the 4th quarter of playoff games. You need GoTo players and goto simplified sets. We need both. It is better than way. There is nothing inherently wrong with isolation (ask Jordan). The only thing wrong is too much isolation.

Well... you and Rudy are right. Its not "motion" its "ISO"...

Francis came up the floor 3 straight times in the first half and did not make the first pass until 16 seconds of the shot clock were gone. That offense is BS! The preseason is the time to look ugly but get used to new things.

They are having a good preseason by doing the same old ****. They are winning bc they are going against teams that are experimenting with their new game plan not out there trying to win. How much progress have you seen this year from last??

    Z E R O !

Kidrock said it right F--- isolations!
