I know that everyone here (well, almost everyone) loves Rudy T and the great job he's done, but how long does he have left?? Rudy Tomjanovich's coaching career will be over soon, by his own terms... When he first got promoted to head coach back in '92, Rudy T didn't even want the job. Even though he's only 51, Rudy is not the kind of guy that will be coaching forever and ever like a Lenny Wilkens or a Bill Fitch. Rudy gets very emotional on the court, and it has taken a toll on him mentally and physically. If he hadn't won those two rings, Rudy T would have already retired by now...It's stressful enough to win one ring, but to win TWO rings, then rebuild a team basically from scratch and get them in the playoffs again is a bit much to ask of one person, even one as mentally tough as Rudy...Just look at some of the great coaches that won multiple titles in the NBA...Red Aeurbach (sp?), Pat Riley, Chuck Daly, Phil Jackson...all four of those guys left their teams shortly after winning multiple titles...Rudy has hung on for FIVE YEARS now after winning two rings, only two of which you can say we had a realistic shot at winning an NBA title...Let's face it, any other coach would have been fired by now, especially after the season we had last year... This team is by no means stable right now...Kato still needs to learn some low-post moves, Mobley is still a ball-hog, Langhi and Collier are unproven, the arena situation won't be resolved until November, and lord knows WHAT Francis will do when it's time to sign him to a long term deal. The Maalox consumption should be pretty steep for Rudy this season... Personally, I think that Rudy will coach for three more seasons, then hand the team over to none other than....Calvin Murphy!! Then, it's on to the Hall of Fame...pretty nice career, wouldn't you say?? A-Train ------------------ If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!
The last time someone asked Rudy T how long he would coach, he said he loved it and would continue to coach as long as possible. That doesn't sound like a guy that is going to retire in 3 years. Don't bet on that either with all the money that could be thrown at him around the league. He is one of the most well-respected coaches in the NBA and I doubt seriously he would retire anytime soon. In fact, when asked last year about what he would do if the team re-located to another city, he said that he would continue to coach because that was his job. ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com
hmmmm, I don't know how much I can trust you on Rudy T's mindset when you still spell Cato's name with a K. j/k He seems to like the job and is getting paid plenty, so I would think he would stick around for a while. ------------------
