I've been googling to see why nuclear reactors cannot be simply turned off. I get answers there and there but I'm still confused. Anyone can help me to understand why they can't just turn them off?

From what I remember, it's mainly because you can't just turn off the unspent enriched uranium rods. They stay really hot until they're spent and needs to be constantly cooled. Think of it as coal in your BBQ, but you can't just poor water on it.

Earthquakes, even big ones happen all the time. If I put up a Youtube video saying BIG THUNDERSTORM TO COME-MARCH! Chances are that a big thunderstorm will happen within a few days. That isn't being prophetic just playing the odds.
