I watched the Laker/Cleveland game last night and Ilgauskas looked awesome. He is 7"3 and ONLY 270!! Ming is only 2 inches taller but over 25 pounds heavier!!!

If those reported figures are correct, shouldnt Ming be fine with his weight. Granted, he may need to get a little stronger but there are not many people in the league heavier than him. Mutumbo, Vlade, Olowakandi all weigh around 260.

    Strange...

As far as I know, he does. I think we heard before the draft he was 296, which I believe was from the Chicago workout. Then the Rockets weighed him in China, and I think Rudy was quoted with something like "he's three hundred pounds" or something like that. Then, I'm sure they weighed him in his physical. Only other weight I've seen is like 253 at the WCS, but I heard the use the same numbers year after year. (I hear they have one player a couple years younger than he actually is.)

I have no prob with Yao's weight. He may gain some more in his career, but I don't want him to be around 350-375 or whatever.

I don't think the talk is really about him getting heavier but he definitely could use some upper body strength.

Yao Ming has huge legs. If his upper body ever fills into his legs then he will be a physical monster.

He weighed in at 296 for his pre draft try out for all to see so I doubt that the number is incorrect. If anything he is probably a little heavier now.

Yao is actually 7'6" in basketball shoes.

Yeah, there are not many NBA players are heavier than 260 lbs., maybe only 80.

Mr, you are exactly right. Yao is no light weight. Everybody keeps harping on this but there are probably only a couple folks that outweight him in the NBA.

Sure he needs to lift some but what rookie doesn't? So mentioning this issue is like saying saying Shaq needs to improve his FT avg. No duh. Next subject please.

Besides, weight isn't the determing factor. Talent is really what matters.

In the NBA you can be undersized and be successful: Barkley/Iverson
You can be unerweight and be successful: Jabar/Sampson

Who ever heard of a fineese center? Dream!

Anybody can be successful if you have the talent to make the most of your physical attributes. So even if Yao never gains a pound, that won't be the determining factor of his success in the NBA.

Yao's weight is fine. Think about this, when Shawn Bradley came into the league he weighed in the neighborhood of 225 pounds. Yao has tremedous legs. I dont care how tall you are, 296 pounds leaning on you is a lot of weight.

krosfyah, sorry man, but that's bunk. Dream had a power game as good as anyones unless you're comparing him to Shaq, then you might as well say every center in the history of the NBA was a "finesse center". Sure, Dream had moves no one has ever had and he he didn't have to go through someone to be effective, but I've got a couple of videos from the '95 Finals that show Hakeem went in on Shaq a lot. Early in his career Dream was a complete bull, though he was incredibly quick. Thinking of Dream as a "finesse" anything is ridiculous and a great disservice to his legacy. That guy was a warrior, and very physical.
