My brakes on my truck have started to squeak, and it doesn't slow down smoothly.

Where do you guys go? Or places you have heard to go to or stay away from?

    Just Brakes, meineke?

Never had to have brake work done before.

Brake Check is usually pretty good, although I bet it depends on the location. I think they still do a free evaluation of brakes, but take that FWIW because sometimes I'm sure they'll want you to change your tires earlier than needed. But in this case, when you know your brakes are out, it wouldn't hurt to check it out. I've been to the one on Stella Link and 610 and it's pretty good.

Thanks, I'm looking at their site now. I'll be down in Houston on the 6th, and would rather go to a place that someone can recommend rather than one up here in Nacogdoches.

yeah my girlfriend paid $45 for windshield wipers in order to pass the inspection.

And NTB charges 50$-75$ each tire and warranty for each tire is like $40 bucks and then you pay half the price of the tire even with the warranty

Your best bet is to go a mexican car shop although there are alot of crooks. Always ask for the price quote first.

How much does a brake job cost? 200$? You can save a good bit by doing it yourself, only a couple hours max if you have a friend.

Just set up an appointment for Brake Check of Westheimer. Inspection, and quote. Plus setting an appointment apparently saved me 20% in labor costs for making it so far ahead. (6th of August).

Do NOT go to Brake Check, those guys are always trying to get you to replace things that are perfectly fine with your car.

This one time, I got a new radiator at a random mechanic shop then I took it to Brake Check right after for an alignment. One of the guys saw something leaking from the bottom of the car profusely. He came to me and told me it was motor oil and he was 100% sure of it and he said he would fix the "leak" for me for some amount of money. I said no. So, I took it back to my mechanic and he said it was transmission fluid leaking from a loose screw in the radiator and all he had to do was tighten it.

I would recommend AAA Complete Auto Repair. Great service and very knowledgeable. Also, they never try to rip you off. There is one off Bisonnett and Cook and another one on Hillcroft and Beechnut.

hmm, well I'm going to have some relatives check it out before I take it to brake check.

I'd try to replace the parts if I knew what needed to be replaced and if I had tools....but sadly I don't.

My brother in law offerred if I bought the parts and beer. But he's in Lafayette, LA.

For a brief period of time I was in the manager's training program for Brake Check back in the late 80's. If the shops do it the way they are trained, there is nothing wrong with using them. They check every part in your brake system, adn they are a little conservative about recommending new parts....but in most cases it is just the mounting hardware they want to replace, which doesnt cost that much and will help your brakes work to their fullest potential.

As far as I know(as long as they havent expanded their range of services in the intervening years), Brake Check is not in the business of fixing oil leaks, so I dispute the account above. When I worked there, they only dealt with brakes and suspensions.

Always go for second opinions in the car repair trade...it's only logical considering how many crooks are still in the business.

Most places you can get it done for $99 per axle.

All these places have good and bad repair guys and locations. Your best bet is to ask around. There are probably bad apples out there at Firestone, Brake Check, etc., but then again there are locations for those places that are probably honest. One of the most honest places I've ever taken my car is a Firestone.

Well, they do offer oil changes now. But them trying to fix something that didn't need to be fixed wasn't the problem. It was that they couldn't tell the difference between motor oil and transmission oil. I asked them 3 times if they were sure it was motor oil and 2 ppl said they are positive. Thank God for second opinions.

Ya, when I set up an appointment online it said I would get a 10% discount on labor. But when I got there they only gave me a 5% discount and out of the 3 things I was getting fixed they gave it to me on the cheapest thing, not the whole total. So I saved about $2....

I WOULD NOT recommend themm. Had a bad experience with AAA and they have many other unhappy customers despite their phony 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.

do NOT go to Just Brakes. They LOVE to pull the "crystallized" routine. Every time. It is impossible to only get your brake pads changed there

Youre gonna get ass raped if you go to any big chain company. Find an independent shop. There are good ones, trust me.

I agree... most likely he only needs pads (at this point) which should be $30 to $35.... but a chain will tell him he needs rotors, pads, etc and quote $400.

Really too bad he can't do them himself, would cost $40 and an hour of his time.

Yeah, i would worry more about the significant cost of labor. They should know what they're doing unless the employee is just a dumbass or slips up.

If it's just the break pads i'd try to find a local mechanic. It's not that hard for the average person, so it's not a difficult task for an experienced mechanic.
