http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html Pretty interesting read here....about how movies now are pumping out Orange and Teal color schemes to all of them. Watch a Michael Bay trailer and you will see it plain as day. I wish movies werent so terrible now, and this reaffirmed my belief that we are heading into a creativity black hole with the next generation.
Can't believe someone would b**** and complained about this. This is the reason that make some or most movies look good to watch. It gives it a sense of mood and depth.
I like some of my movies to have this kind of look. Especially Sci-fi. Part of Lord of the Rings also have this look. I'm not saying all movies should be doing this but some movies work nicely with this kind of color tone.
I'm pretty sure people wouldn't notice or complain if they didn't know about this. I have seen a lot of movies with this tone and they look good. If some movies didn't use this technique their movies would look cheap and look unprofessional. For example the movie Monsters that cost a mere $800,000 look great with this teal and orange. It's a cheap process but it does give the movie an expensive professional look to it.
It does get kinda annoying when watching trailers. I remember they wrote about this in a Cracked article 8 months ago: 5 Annoying Trends That Make Every Movie Look the Same
I think it's just a sign that you're getting old. I feel the same way about popular music in general. (Can't stand Indie rock either....it's God awful)
hollywood seems to get worse and worse every year. i almost feel sorry for the oscars, having to choose b/t all this crap for nominations and awards. i saw that 'social network' facebook movie on a plane couple weeks ago. what a stupid f-cking film. still can't believe such a low depth shallowly insightfool B-level flick got nominated. perhaps hollywood needs to stop the inbreeding and diversify in order to get back it's creative mojo.
I feel like I picked up on this subconsciously in the past but never gave much thought to it. But after reading that article, 127 Hours came to mind immediately. I went back to watch the trailer, and HOLY CRAP. There is so much blue and orange that it actually made me laugh. I realize that there are a lot of natural colors in play here (sky vs. earth - highly saturated no less) but it's much more than that if you look closely. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OlhLOWTnVoQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Interesting articles. But, I don't think the color palette bothers me. I always think it is pretty interesting to see old movies and photos and be able to date them by their palette. So, our era will be known for orange and teal, ok. We'll move on to some other trend later and look back at today's movies and roll our eyes. Just like I do with movies from the 80s.
I've noticed it, never give it a second thought. It makes the movie looks more surreal and I like it, so who gives a shet.
In Traffic they used a different hue for each locale. I don't mind for the most part, but in some movies it gets a little tiring.
^ That's a very good point, sir. So many other movies after that have picked up on it. I don't know many movies that did that before. The skin of most actors is a YELLOWISH/ORANGE-ish color tone. Most of the people you meet everyday have a white-yellow-orange-brown look to them. It's pleasing to the eye to see orange and yellow and brown against blue. No one is b****ing or complaining about it... I believe they're just pointing it out. Also:
I always wondered why everyone looked so greasy in the Transformers movies. Even when they aren't running around. Greasy. Take a shower, geez.
What's funny is that the hues that were used were actually Teal and Orange. When the story lines meshed, they went to a neutral hue.
