UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 22 — The United States is running out of patience with the United Nations, where Washington has been unable to gain support for a new toughly worded resolution on Iraq. “It’s coming down to the end,” White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Tuesday. “The United Nations does not have forever.”

    ******
WASHINGTON HAS SOUGHT a U.N. resolution that that would carry an automatic military response if Iraq is found not to be cooperating with weapons inspectors.
However, it needs the backing of the five veto-holding permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — and only Britain has vouched its support.
Two other permanent members, France and Russia, have balked at submitting to Washington’s request, even after U.S. diplomats circulated a toned-down draft resolution on Monday.
In its first official response, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said the proposal was still unacceptable.
“The American draft resolution, which was presented yesterday, does not answer the criteria [for resolution of the Iraq crisis] which the Russian side laid out earlier and which it confirms today,” Ivanov said, according to the Interfax news agency.
Ivanov made the statement several hours after meeting with Hans Blix, the head of the chief U.N. weapons inspector.

    MORE DISCUSSIONS
Russia opposes a provision that would automatically allow military action against Iraq if it doesn’t comply with demands and has repeatedly called for the return of weapons inspectors to Iraq as soon as possible under the terms of existing U.N. resolutions.

Ivanov said that he discussed the new draft Tuesday in telephone calls with Secretary of State Colin Powell and French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, Interfax said.
France has led the opposition to Washington’s hard-nosed approach.
On Tuesday, De Villepin said the French government was studying the U.S. draft but stressed that there was still much work to be done to reach a consensus.
On Monday, French U.N. Ambassador Jean-David Levitte said he did not think an agreement was close, even before he viewed the new U.S. draft.

    IN A BIND
The stalemate has put the Bush administration in a bind since the president began pushing for U.N. support five weeks ago.
The frustration was reflected in Fleischer’s remarks to reporters on Tuesday.
“The United Nations does not have forever,” he said, “and we’ll continue to work it and see when we get an agreement, if we get an agreement, how to proceed.”
For his part, Bush again warned that Washington does not necessarily need the support of the United Nations.
“For the sake of having an international body which is effective, the United Nations must be resolved to deal with this person,” said Bush, referring to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
“If the United Nations can’t make its mind up, if Saddam Hussein won’t disarm, we will lead a coalition to disarm him for the sake of peace,” Bush added, speaking at a Pennsylvania Republican campaign rally.
On Monday, the president suggested the new U.S. resolution offered a way out for Iraq and that Saddam could avoid a U.S.-led military attack if he complied with all the U.N. demands for disarmament.

“We’ve tried diplomacy,” Bush said. “We’re trying it one more time. I believe the free world, if we make up our mind to, can disarm this man peacefully, but if not, we have the will and the desire as do other nations to disarm Saddam.”
Bush said the U.S. policy seeking a regime change in Iraq remained intact. “We don’t believe he’s going to change,” Bush said after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General George Robertson.
“However, if he were to meet all the conditions of the United Nations, the conditions that I’ve described very clearly ... that in itself would signal the regime has changed,” he said.
U.N. weapons chief Blix echoed Bush’s comments, saying that Iraq could avoid war if it cooperated with the monitors. “I think that if the Iraqis help and cooperate to create confidence that there remain no weapons of mass destruction, then I think there will be no war,” Blix told reporters Tuesday in Moscow.

The annoyed arrogant tones of the Bush gang are telling. Talking about the "Ugly American " syndrome!

We should strike Russia now while we pretend to be their friends. Then, we can launch an attack from Southern Russia into Iraq. Then, we will be in a position to close in on Iran. Then, we will be in a better position to deal with China, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. We have them all right where we want them.

Hoo Hoo Hoh Hoh Hah Hah Haaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

The French won't do anything...because we are the French and we do nothing except watch Pepe Le Peaux cartoon re-runs and eat pizza. Piss on you Americans and your arrogant ways. ;)

I remember when I first proposed that the post Cold War US was increasingly getting imperialistic, and adopting a might is right approach to things, I was told that the US was just doing what the free world wanted, and that they were protecting themselves.....Now we're back to the Big Stick Defense, in the face of the rest of the 'free world's rejection of our justification for our proposed actions...I wish it were gratifying, but it's just scary.

Every other, and I mean EVERY OTHER nation which has tried to abuse it's position as the dominant world power (since the formation of the Alliance System to counter the power of Louis XIV's France ) in the face of opposition of it's fellow nations has been termed a tyrant, and eventually opposed in force, to it's downfall....Is that really the road we, the Defenders of Freedom, want to take in the long run? The more we act alone the more we will be.

Kattan: This is my miniature horse, Apples. He was a circus rescue, some disgruntled clowns set fire to some oily rags and burned down the Hoxy Brothers Big Top.

    Morgan: I'm Brian Fellows.

    Kattan: Hello!

Morgan: That is the biggest dog I've ever seen, what is wrong with that dog?

    Kattan: It's not a dog, it's a miniature horse.

Morgan: I wanna see that dog catch a frisbee.

Kattan: Uhh, yeah, he sometimes gets mistaken for a Shetland Pony, but never a dog.

Morgan: Did you see that weird goat?

    Kattan: Yes.

Morgan: He had devil eyes. I hope he gone. If that goat is still here, I'm gonna wait outside his dressing room and just kill him, just kill him!

Kattan: That's terrible, killing a poor goat.

    Morgan: I'm Brian Fellows.

Kattan: I KNOW THAT, I'M MORTY, AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MY MINIATURE HORSE, APPLES!!!

Morgan: Can I bring your dog with me, to help me trick that goat?
Well, that's all the time we have for today. Join us next time when we'll meet a tree frog. Ahahahahahahahha, a tree frog, that's funny. I'm Brian Fellows.

I dislike the French more and more with each passing day. They constantly act like they are morally superior to the US and belittle our country. One of my favorite stories about the French took place at the company where I work. This French guy is actually a naturalized US citizen, and he was interviewing MBA candidates in Paris. One of the candidates started going off on and insulting the US, and the US citizen just stopped, stared at him, told him he was in fact a US citizen, and then stopped the interview right there and asked the fool to leave. Eat it Pierre!!!

Iraq invaded Kuwait. Iraq lost war. Iraq agreed to weapons inspectors if war would stop. Iraq stops weapons inspectors.

Iraq has broken the deal, not the US.

If Iraq re-agrees to weapons inspectors unconditionally, I'm down with that. That's all the UN has to get Saddam do to stop the US's "imperialistic" nature. Live up to the cease fire agreement, or there is no cease fire. The UN was behind the original deal, but is not behind enforcing it and is siding with the original aggressor.

The US has little to gain by attacking Iraq since there isn't any intention to take it over. We are hurting ourselves economically and not establishing our political rule. The only thing the US is trying to do is prevent an aggressive hostile nation from harming the US and our Allies, again.

When Hitler moved troops into the Rhineland in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, he obviously was just trying to get some breathing room. People don't break Peace Treaties to make Peace.

The French have Nukes as well, just felt like educating some of ya'll in here. Why should we take the time and listen to other countries? Well, would we like it if another country wanted to push us aside and tell us that they will do whatever they feel is neccessary? No, we would go to war with a country like that pretty quickly because a country like that is dangerous. I'm not a fan of the French either, but at least they are taking a stand against this ridiculous "Bush Doctrine" and the other things we're trying to do. This Iraq thing should be a political issue the same way it is with North Korea and our main focus should be on breaking up Al Queda and building evidence to prove to the whole world, undeniably, who the backers are.

This is nonfactual. But if you repeat it often, you might get other people top believe it too.

Do you realize how many nations are currently breaking 'deals', including the U.S., or how many are currently violating U.N. resolutions, including Israel? WHen you pick and choose who has to follow what agreements/sanctions, to suit your own wants, and back up those selcetive demands with military force/threats, you are being 'imperialisitc'. Great Britain, France, the U.S.S.R. Rome, the Mongols, etc., etc. all cited reasons for their actions...many included responses to threats, terrorist type attacks, and breaking of agreements.

How do you know that the U.S has no intention of taking over Iraq? Didn't we also say we would leave S.A. as soon as Iraq left Kuwait? And is it possible that setting up a 'US friendly' government modelled after our own just might be to our economic advantage?

Re: breaking 'peace treaties', Hitler et al...Hitler's pursuit of liebensraum wasn't cited about Rhineland...There are many, many examples of 'peace treaties' being broken in alleged pursuit of peace...for example G.B with Napoleon, the U.S. with the Sioux, Apache, etc., the U.S with Panama, etc...

Remember World Wars One and Two? Fought on their soil? Entire generations of French men killed or maimed? 'In Flanders fields the poppies grow/ Beneath the crosses row on row/ that mark their place...' You know, all that. I mean, I think they're kind of pricks now, myself, what with all that nuclear testing in the Pacific and blowing up ships in our harbour and stuff, merci beaucoup mes amis... but their being on the UN Security Council makes a lot of sense, historically.

The US told the inspection team that they would be bombing Iraq soon and that they could not guarantee the inspection team's safety. The inspection team left. Us and UK bombed Iraq. Iraq stated that the inspection team was no longer welcome, a shocker!!!
