I love it. I wish I could tell you more, but I'm really bad at explaining why I love the music. :D

I know that I am not MR. MEOWGI, but I did buy recently all 3 of those groups.

My impressions of those 3 are like this:

    1) The White Stripes - pretty good band that has a more "stripped down sound", they remind me of a garage band. Their lead singer sounds sorta like Frank Black aka Black Francis of the Pixies.

    2) The Hives - a bit punkier than White Stripes, their CD, "Veni Vidi Vicious" is less than 30 minutes long.

And of course, you know about The Vines, which I think have the most variety or different styles than White Stripes and the Hives, but I think they are all good bands.

    Beck - Mellow Gold
Beck - Sea Change (It's fun listening to these two back to back :) )
    Velvet Underground - Loaded
    Blur - Great Escape
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
    Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    Wilco - Being There
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head

By the way, is the new Foo Fighters anything like their first one? I LOVE the self-titled album...it seemed so fresh and spontaneous. The whole thing was recorded in two weeks! The last couple of Foo Fighters albums just sound so overproduced and calculated (except for Everlong, which just kicks ass). Just my opinion.

Sorry, should have posted that in the first place. The collection is called "Shake it up: American Power Pop II, 1978-1980" on Rhino. I have never heard any of these songs before and hardly any of the bands. I am really digging it. Worth a look.

Pole: You're right about the title to the new audio format. My bad. I am kind of pissed off that I bought most of the Stones albums already, including the singles boxset. I hate having to buy re-releases. In the case of Elvis Costello, I am on my third batch of all of his cds, damn it!

The more of these music threads the better, I can't keep track of all the new stuff coming out. My current rotation:
    Chevelle
    The Shins
Division of Laura Lee (Hives # 2 but really good)
    Minor Threat
Mars Volta (took awhile to grow on me)
    Ash
Apples in Stereo (some good stuff)
    Imperial Teen
Trail of Dead (I can't recommend these guys enough)
    The Cult (Demos)
    Lil Flip
    Blackalicious

I've been listening to nothing but Pet Sounds for about a month. Credit that for my absence in recent political threads. It's mellowed me to butter. Today I'd finally had enough and started back on Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3. But all I hear in my head is the music from the rock opera by The Kinks I rehearse every night.

That's some good stuff, Batman. I think the Beach Boys, well, Brian Wilson, at least, were brilliant. I got the Pet Sounds boxset over the summer and really immersed myself. Transcendently beautiful music.

That bootleg series is amazing, isn't it? How could you not release "Seven Curses," "Mama, You've been on my mind" and "Blind Willie McTell?!" I think that his poem "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie" is one of the most moving things I've ever heard. Thanks for reminding me of this! I am going to listen to it, myself.

"Pet Sounds" is one of the greatest CDs of all-time. The funny thing about this (and you probably knew this Batman) was that Brian Wilson did "Pet Sounds" as an "answer album" to "Rubber Soul" by the Beatles. After hearing "Pet Sounds", the Beatles tried to "answer" with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

The Beach Boys are great but it really was Brian Wilson. Nothing pisses me off more than to see that smug, arrogant SOB, Mike Love, think he was something. He was a joke.

It is also ironic to me that with all the drugs and problems that Brian had, that he is the ONLY Wilson brother still alive (Dennis died in a drowning accident & I believe Carl had a heart attack or maybe cancer).

Yesterday I saw an E! promo for the Beach Boys True Hollywood Story, and Mike Love is saying something like 'I never thought we would last as long as we have'. I was like, dude! You're playing with *John F*cking Stamos*! You're a long-lasting *novelty act*! You should tour under the name Beach Boils!

Current fave Beach Boys song is 'Sail on Sailor'. The Super Furry Animals played it before their show in Austin - I'd never heard it before...
