I just ran out of anti virus protection for my pc. Any tips? I want the best security, and the least burden on memory/speed. I know AVG is free and popular, but I'm just not sure if I can trust it. If you haven't had a virus in ages, it makes me wonder if they're just not getting caught by your antivirus. Appreciate the help, thanks!
Doesn't have to be free guys, as long as it's light and provides maximum security. I'm interested in Microsoft security essentials. I'm running windows so I imagine it would blend in very well.
even the paid version of avg sucks, imagine how bad the free one is. I would go with Esset or Vipre. Of course neither are free.
I switched to Kaspersky on another machine a few years back to escape the bogging Norton, and it was much better, like night and day. I would recommend it, though it wasn't a free version.
Well, I was going to suggest Norton AntiVirus 2011 since I had posted it in my coupon/deal thread and it was going for $2.99 with free shipping @ Best Buy, but when I checked, it was now $39.99. At home I use one called Vipre and it has always worked well for me. This is also what the IT department uses here at the office. Pugs
Heard good things: Nod32 Kapersky Avira (free!) Have not heard good things (adequate but could have a better coverage such as scanning for rootkits): Norton Comodo AVG No opinion: Avast MS security essentials....the malware scanner is NOT a solution. Turn it off when you get a real scanner. Though I'm not enthused about the scanner, use Comodo for firewall.
There is no "best security" when it comes to antivirus software. They all miss something others catch and vice-versa. That being said, as long as you don't go clicking every p*rn link or every "omgidon'thavetopayifigohere" site, you should be fairly safe from viruses. I haven't had a virus (I think) since 1995. Avira probably has one of the best scanning engines, but I know when version 10 was originally released people had problems with the install. It's one reason I stayed away from it. I may have to revisit it. They have a free version as well. Avast has an awesome scanning engine as well. For a free scanner, I'd use either of these. If you don't mind paying, I'd check out Avira assuming they've fixed the issues they had when they first released the latest version. The only thing to be wary of when using freeware versions of products is that many don't have the same level of protection as the "for-pay" versions. You may also want to look into security/antivirus products like Threatfire and Prevx.
I don't think Eset/NOD32's scanning engine is as good as Avira's, but in its glory days, it was among the best (still is), but it combined a good scanning engine with light-weight memory usage and fast scanning.
