Playing only helps certain skills to be refined. Without fundamentals, playing creates bad habits. Practice allows the coaches to teach fundamentals in a controlled environment. Thabeet needs to learn how to rotate, eat, get leverage, and box out. These should be done off court until he only needs to refine skills to game speed.

    ESPN:
[rquoter]The Rockets acquired Hasheem Thabeet from the Grizzlies at the trade deadline and general manager Daryl Morey has a lot of decisions to make about the center. It's going to be hard to evaluate him this season because he's not expected to play that much as the Rockets try to earn a spot in the playoffs.

"We made some tough choices at the trade deadline, trading away very good players we we're close to. Hasheem is someone who at this point in his career is not playing at high level. We're hoping for him to grow into it. As we're trying to make a playoff push, we understand coach [Rick Adelman] is going with guys he's familiar with."

There is a chance Morey will send Thabeet to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the D-League. Thabeet hopes he can show his skills during practice and other workouts for the team.

"I have to come out here and work," Thabeet said. "I'm not just sitting here thinking because my third year is picked up already it is time to relax. I'm ready to work. I'm committed to this. I want to come out here and become a great player and also a great person."

Thabeet will earn $5.12 million next season and has a team option at $6.47 million for 2012-13.[/rquoter]

Man! picking up that last year of his contract is a tough decision, i hope he pans out he has guys here that can teach him Dawson, Hakeem(maybe), Sikma, Hayes, Yao(maybe), also i think Patterson has good fundamentals he too could help him out a little.

Rockets would be happy with a Black Bradley.
I didn't see any signs that Hasheem can improve to Yao's level. Yao already got great shooting touch and good footwork before coming in NBA.

I am some what optimistic for one reason: he is a center and not much is expected from him.

essentially all he has to do is learn a few very basic rotations and use his size. Jerry West and Mutombo have commented on it before. Someone with the size and mobility of Hasheem only needs to contest shots, rotate in the paint and rebound.

The shot blocking is not an issue, he actually has good instincts. He needs to learn rotations and not worry about scoring other than put-backs.

IF he is willing to accept his role and works hard; there is no reason he can't get 10 points/ 10 rebounds and 3 blocks a game... in the modern game those are near elite level numbers.

He needs to look to players like Mutombo, Ratliff and Eaton as role models.

He better hurry up though... otherwise that 8 million dollar option won't be picked up.

This writer's glass is definitely over-spilling full. How does one resurrect a career that never really began?

Just like you can't teach height, you can't teach speed. Guy can barely move his feet, looks slower than Yao, go look at his college/NBA stuff on Youtube.

No....he doesn't look slower than Yao.

The only players I've seen slower than yao are Shaq and possibly Brad

I hope Morey does send Thabeet down to the D-League since Adelman won't be playing him anytime soon. It's better to jumpstart his developmental process than be nailed to the bench. The game experience and learning the system will be good for him. The good thing about Thabeet is he doesn't seem to have an ego about going down to the D-League again (which he shouldn't, but still it's good).

Actually he tested very good overall athletically, he runs the court like a deer, and has good leaping ability for someone that size. His overall athleticism is actually off the charts for someone at that size, 7'3.

Personally I think people need to stop pre-judging this kid before they get to even see this him play. The only thing people should know about this kid right know is that his hungry to get better and prove hater's and critics wrong ...

    Hasheem Thabeet on proving himself:

So can we please stop with the pre-conceptions on this kid, and give him a chance to prove himself to the coach, the organization and the fans.

I mean, really, they should send him to the D-league now so that he can get some game experience. That way he may still be able to come back later and try to help in our playoff run(if we make it). One thing i know for sure, waiting definitely will not help. They should have done the same for T-Will.

Huh? The guy looks like a gazelle for being 7'3". It's one of his only redeeming factors.

Seeing this quote by Thabeet brought me tears of joy! This guy is a real team player.;) He should actually get more respect on this forum for that, at least.
