Does no drinking mean no locally grown herbal supplements?

If not I recommend going somewhere with locally grown herbal supplements

Stay in the states unless you want to get kidnapped or end up in the middle of a riot.

I just went to Colombia and didn't get kidnapped.

I'm going to the Middle East in less than two weeks. I highly doubt I'll end up in the middle of a riot.

    Hey Bats:

You can call ahead to the resort if you like. Call the resort directly rather then through the agent. We did that for our Mexican trip in December -- helps if you speak Spanish. Our son has a very restricted diet (no sugar, flour, milk, etc) and they were able to accommodate. Vegan isn't that odd. (though there are a few Vegans who are :)).

and email FFB through the board is you need good artichoke recipes.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Our plans have changed a bit and while money is still not a major issue we'd like to drive to our destination and stay in the country. We'd still love to find a beach that's not overrun with drunken party people and we'd love to find a luxury hotel (hopefully with spa, massage options). Does such a thing exist? Or are all drivable beach destinations going to be full of college kids? Not as worried about the diet stuff anymore as I expect a luxury hotel will be able to accommodate those needs.

I know there are lots of semi-remote areas of Galveston, but I feel like they are all beach house situations and we'd like to be pampered and avoid cooking and cleaning on the trip.

I know Galveston is not a beautiful beach with beautiful water but we are willing to sacrifice that to avoid flying and all that entails. We'll only be able to get away for three or four days and would enjoy a drive of up to 5 hours or so, a luxury hotel and a somewhat secluded (or more family oriented) beach.

We're looking at the San Luis in Galveston (at texxx's suggestion) but wonder if the nearby beach will be as crowded as the rest of Galveston undoubtedly will be.

We also looked at a super luxury hotel in Lake Ponchatrain, which looks awesome (though very expensive), but the limited availability there makes me worry that it too will be crowded with kids, albeit rich ones.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks, wes. Great suggestion.

    However, our ideas keep changing.

We've dropped the beach now and are just focusing on luxury. And I think we've settled on Dallas just because neither of us has ever been there (well, I've been for a night on business, but not on vacation) and there are a lot of exciting restaurant options for us. We just want to relax, get massages and go out to eat a lot.

Can people give recommendations about their favorite Dallas hotels?

Looks like we got it covered now. Thanks for all the tips. We will take advantage of some of the out of country ones in the future.

    Seriously...Dallas?

In the future, Atlanta is great for veg options and has a good variety of outdoor excursions close by.

Yeah, Dallas. We're not even going to leave the hotel except to go out to eat. Not looking for excursions or adventures, just relaxation.

I directed a play in Atlanta and I liked it there a lot, but we're really just looking for a break from busy lives and that drive is too far for that - especially since we plan on staying in the hotel like 20 hours of each day. Also, I've had all the vegan food in ATL (at least as of 2005) and I haven't had any of the vegan food in Dallas.

Looks beautiful. Reminds me of Lake Toba in Indonesia which is the world's largest volcanic lake.

    BJ;

I know you are talking about having a luxurious trip but since I gather you are socially conscious have you considered something maybe not so luxurious but more environmentally sound? I know for awhile there were vacations to the gulf coast that also involved helping with rebuilding from Katrina that might be a rewarding experience for you and your GF. Also are eco-trourism trips to Costa Rica where you can help with preserving and studying the ecology there.

I'm not suggesting this to guilt you but from what I know of your posting history it seems like you might enjoy those type of vacations.

It's a good suggestion, judoka. But we both lead very stressful lives and never indulge in any real comfort. We need to relax. And that's not very easy for me to do, given stress, anxiety issues, insomnia, etc. I loved Costa Rica when I visited there years back but that sort of vacation, while restorative, takes as much energy as it gives. I need a serious, pro massage, some real sleep, a pool, a bath, some books and some quiet time with my lady. And some fresh food options that I can be sure are vegan so they won't upset my delicate constitution.

Your suggestion makes perfect sense, but I'm not going on vacation to make the world a better place; I'm going for some much needed rest.

That's understandable. I guess for me I am one of those who like a more active vacation.

Whatever you decide to do hope you have a great time!

    BJ,
If you don't mind, which hotel? I had a weekend almost like that at the Hotel Zaza in Houston, but I'd love to know where to go in Dallas to get that experience.
