Many of you, I'm sure, is as dissapointed as I am with the lack of major upgrade to the roster post trade deadline. Below is a short list of deals that might have helped the rockets, but Morey chose not/could not proceed: 1) Tyson Chandler - well reported on this forum. Morey offered Jeffries but it wasn't enough. Has anyone wondered whether offering Battier might have been enough? Who knows, but not having a healthy centre certainly impacted the Rockets. I think, in hindsight, Morey would have made this deal a must-have and not sign Brad Miller subsequently 2) Gerald Wallace - once Carmelo went to NY, most of the Rockets fans were hoping for a Gerald Wallace package. Rumous has it Rockets indeed did try but did not meet Charlotte's asking price. It was also rumoured whoever took Wallace will have to eat Boris Diaw's $9m contract. Turns out, all Charlotte wanted was 2 first-roudn picks, scraps (waived immediately) and some expiry contract. Expiry contracts, well we have tons, but notably both Jeffries or Battier should suffice. If it wasn't enough, throw in Buddinger's minimal contract which should certainly fit as icing on the cake. I know what everyone's asking - where are the two first round picks going to come from? Well - we would have got more than enough picks if we traded Courtney Lee's contract. Rumous has it Chicago kicked up the offer to 2 first round picks for Courtney Lee. So Rockets should have enough assets to execute on the trade. 3) OJ Mayo - If we trade Courtney Lee, that certainly leaves a gap on the SG position. Bringing back JT would be great but probably not possible. So what do we do? Well - OJ Mayo was available for a big and another pick....Jordan Hill anyone? I didn't do the maths and checked the financials worked, but in the most ideal case this would give us a roster featuring Chandler, Scola, Wallace, Lowry, Martin & Mayo. I know I'm just talking 2k11 basketball here so would welcome people's views and point out whether these trades were actually possible or not. But just saying there did appear to be some available opportunities but we didn't/couldn't get a good deal done. Hindsight is a perfect vision, I know.
I'm ok with this one - we would not have forked out $100m to re-sign him and he would have darted off to NY anyway. At the extreme optimistic case where we re-sign Scola as a restricted free agent, we would have still lose Battier.
None of those deals look very appealing. Wallace is a glorified role-player on most good teams. And we have enough of those. I'd rather let Budinger develop and see some of the youth we have OJ Mayo would of been a nice trade if the package was right. He has decent upside and would be a good foundation for a young team. Tyson Chandler would of been a nice addition but he wasn't going to make us a contender. I think Morey has us in a great position. We have financial flexibility in the coming years to make FA acquisitions and we are getting enough picks/youth to package for another player if the right circumstances present themselves.
Tyson Chandler definitely would have been a very solid pickup for the Rockets, but at the time Morey was hoping Yao could come back and be a service-able Center for Houston. Was depending on that a mistake? Obviously it was, but ultimately, Battier was supposed to be the defensive stopper in the starting lineup... Chandler was going to be an insurance policy. At the time, giving up Battier would have been too much. Not that I think it would have been a bad move... Obviously Houston probably should have did everything they could to pull it off. Gerald Wallace -- Look, I was one of the guys on this forum that really wanted Houston to make that move. I was begging for Morey to pull the trigger on whatever it took to bring him in, but let's be honest, Wallace isn't a tremendous offensive threat. Can he put up points? Sure, but he got most of his points being the #1 option on an awful offensive team. His defense is pretty damn solid, but I think Houston ultimately made the right move by passing him up because of his contract. Many people said it was the type of move that keeps a team like Houston in mediocrity for years... and I'm really starting to agree with them. OJ Mayo -- I like Mayo's game, but he's really become overrated. His piss poor attitude about coming off the bench is a damn shame because the guy can be a very solid PG/SG sixth man type (like Jamal Crawford was for Atlanta last year), but his poor attitude has turned him into a volume chucker... which I really don't want any part of, especially if it required Courtney Lee to be part of the trade.
lol@jeffries for tyson tyson is playing very well with dallas, there was no chance gerald - he would have been a great edition, but our priority was a center i want to know why we couldn't get perkins...we could have offered more than green what else was in that deal?
assuming DM didn't turned down these deals: Iggy + Dalember for T-Mac Stoudmire for Scola + Battier we'd still trade Landry (with some throw-in) for K-mart and Ariza for Lee and Brooks for Dragic + 1st pick we could have a lineup like this: Dalember, Hayes, Miller Stoudmire, PatPat Igudala, C-Bud Martin, Lee, T-Will Lowry, Dragic, Ish some might argue we could have lose Amare in FA, in this case, we'd get a huge TPE that could bring us Al Jefferson instead, not bad. with Dalember and Amare/Jefferson on board, Yao might had rest more and avoid the re-injury (a big IF of course)
there needs to be a sticky regarding the chandler deal...It was MJ who ruined that deal...not morey not anyone else. MJ backed out and messed up the whole thing. Let's quit talking about it like morey didn't do something correctly. Notice that 2 of the 3 deals you think were missed had to do with MJ...he's just on another planet right now, who knows what he's thinking.
@trueroxfan.... Believe it or not we could have got perkins, all boston wanted was battier. But of course morey is always a B**** for good players. He rather get thabeet an unproven player. Our line up would of been C- Perkins/Chuck/Miller F- Scola/Patterson/Hill F- Budinger/Williams G- Martin/Lee G- Lowry/Dragic
i aint talking about the oringinal 3-way trade. it could be a simple Landry+throw-in(Cook/Anderson/Dorsey/Taylor) for Martin Landry was the only player Kings wanted anyway. ok ok or just simply trade Landry for Marcus Thornton like the Kings just did. Dalember, Hayes, Miller Stoudmire, PatPat Igudala, C-Bud Lee/Thornton, Lee/Thornton, T-Will Lowry, Dragic, Ish
why everyone keeps crying for the Amare's deal, he would have completed his final year and left in the free agency.
I also think chances are high Amare would have signed an extension with us, just like Melo he wants the cold hard cash. However the lack of a physical ruined this deal. You can't fault Morey for not committing 100$M to a person who didn't take his physical. Its ****ing moronic to blame Morey for not pissing out of that deal, only an idiot (i.e, Isiah THomas) would do that without a physical first. If we had signed Amare and he ends up busting his knee in the 2nd year of a 5 year max contract it would be Yao Ming all over again.
Why don't you tell me who would have started form Boston yesterday at center if they traded Perkins for Battier?
Btw, you're absolutely clueless if you think DM values Thabeet and a low first rounder more than Perkins, lmao.
The Tyson Chandler deal STILL hurts. We would be battling for the 5th seed right now and our trade deadline might have looked VERY different.
