You watch a movie, like a song in the movie, then you buy the soundtrack and it isn't on the movie? Why is that?

Well, as I understand it, there are two different types of music in movies, the soundtrack and the score. The score is more like the orchestrated music that is written to match the action or mood on screen, and might not necessarily be fun to listen to by itself. The soundtrack is more like already written songs that they put in the movie...

...perhaps you bought the wrong one? That's the only thing I can think of.

No, I'm pretty sure this is the song. Also, how many movies have 15 songs playing in it? It's the right movie, I know that for sure. Hmmm..where can I download scores?

I watch a movie, like a song in the movie, remember some of the lyrcis from the song, do a Google search of those exact lyrics, find out who the ong is by and the title, go to KaZaA, download it, burn it, drink a beer, watch CSI.

    something like that.

To illustrate this point, let’s follow the clearance procedure for using a single song to be included in the soundtrack of a feature film. Keep in mind that this example IS ONLY for rights to one song in a feature film for theatrical release, and does not include rights for any other use, such as use the song on the film soundtrack album, which would involve additional contracts and additional payments.

I must confess...after seeing the Punch Drunk Love previews I looked on the Internet to try and find out which song it was that played during the end of the trailer. It turns out it was "He Needs Me" from the Popeye Soundtrack sung by Shelly Duvall (Olive). I haven't seen that movie since I was a little kid, but I do have some recollection of it during the movie. It's really a nice, strange little song...funny that Paul Thomas Anderson would use it, although I don't know if it's actually in the movie.
