Why didn't Yao get traded?

Assuming the next CBA is close to the current, you're close but missing something. Teams that fall under the salary (which the Rockets would once renouncing Yao) do not get an MLE when their payroll climbs back up.

You get cap space or the exception. VBut you can not use both.

    $0

No more Yao. No more being handcuffed by his injuries, especially when we are not going to contend for the championship. Time to let go and move on.

You're close but still need some tweaking.

Assuming the next CBA is not too different from the current, and the Rockets renounce Yao, and they fall under the cap....

they do not receive an MLE once the payrolls exceeds the cap. You get cap space or exceptions. But not both.

Yao is the cash cow. You re-sign him for less and make money off the Chinese fans. Pretty simple

I love it when people say, "I don't want to be a jerk." or, "I don't want to say this or that." and then they just say it. Always gets a giggle out of me.

Why would anyone in hell want Yao when he can't even stay on the court for like 20 games? And how does having a raw, undeveloped player make Yao expendable? I'm done with Yao coming back, but don't be ignorant and say that Thabeet makes Yao expendable.

I'm not Les Alexander, so I do not make money. As a fan, I want this team to win basketball games. Pretty simple.

We couldn't find an interested taker

    /question

Going forward: obviously it'd be nice to keep him around on a VERY small dollar deal (hell, we're paying Thabeet $5M next year and he's an even worse gamble than Yao's feet), but if Golden State or someone else swoops in offering $7M or more? Move on.

Umm, Yao Ming would not yield any assets, he would yield a long-term contract to make salaries match or the Rockets would be giving up an asset to convince a low payroll team to take him for nothing.

Expirings only have value when there are good FAs to be had, and there aren't.

Anyway, I did the math and assuming the Rockets dont resign TWill, Hill, Miller, Jeffries, Thabeet, and assuming they're paying Yao and Lee an average of 5 million each, that still puts them 18 mill under the current cap in 2012.

Everyone has vastly overrated expiring contracts ever since the Lakers were able to trade Kwame Browns expiring contract for Pau. I can't think of any players of note who given up mainly for cap relief.
