i would. with melo and amare, all you have is two 1-on-1 players. their skills aren't being used efficiently. williams and amare pick and roll would absolutely destroy.
And that being said, pgs won 2 of the finals mvps in the last decade, a small forward hasn't won one for over 20 years.
What about neither? I don't think either of these guys are transcendant players that you could talk about building "around". Put them with a bunch of really solid other guys, or 3 or 4 all-stars around them and you might have something.
oh wait pierce broke the duck didn't he, but before that the last SF was Larry Bird who was as much a PF as a SF (probably would have played pf on 25 other teams), and prior to that Dr J (and Moses won the finals mvp). Elite pgs (or any position) leading their teams to nba titles sort of requires elite players full stop, and in terms of talent, SGs and C's trumped them for a long time (after Magic and Isiah retired, Stockton was the only HoF pg for 10+ years really), there were 4 HoF centres in the league, and another C/PF to enter at an all star level at the tail of the decade, whilst the SG's post MJ weren't much til Kobe matured and Dwyane came about. And these days, we have Sf's like Lebron and Durant who when its all said and done are probably going to both be arguably 2 of the best 3 in their positions ever.
i'm guessing the only type of player you think you can build around are kevin durant, lebron james, and kobe bryant.
Just because an elite PG has never won a title doesn't mean Melo is better. Last time I checked he hasn't won a title either.
Were those Finals MVPs max players? No. Meaning you could address more important needs rather than giving all that money to a distributor. Not to mention they were more of the score-first variety. SF, SG, same thing. Both wings.
What, are you referring to Tony Parker of the Spurs winning a Finals MVP? We all know Tim Duncan (Future Hall of Famer & Best PF of all time) has always been the foundation of that team.
Exactly. The dude is trying to be way technical but SG and SF are both wing players. Tony Parker was the Finals MVP cause he had a great series, but we all know it was Timmy's team.
SG and PG are both guards, same thing Yes this is your rationale. Some teams play SGs and PGs closer to each other, others play SFs and SG's closer to each other, Carmelo for example is closer to a PF than he is to a SG for filler minutes, and he sure as hell is no swingman (like Durant can be) or a point forward (like Lebron). Great wing players who win titles play the SG position, not SF, it may well just be a product of there not being the talent at true SF, but it is what it is.
scoring wings are more valuable to a contending team than a all-star pg. melo can take over games with his scoring more than d-will. d-will is a great pg but down the stretch is a facilitator more than a scorer while melo is a true closer and one of the most clutch players in the game. the knicks still most likely never win a title as long as the big 3 in miami are there and dantoni is still head coach.
Again, when's the last time a PG on a MAX contract took his team to the Finals? A PG on a MAX contract is what Deron Williams is. I can think of tons of Wing players making MAX money who took their team to the Finals, even SF's such as LEbron James. Can you give me an example of a PG?
Not sure if their salaries were max but guessing it was among the top but Isiah Thomas? Magic Johnson?
I still don't get how "max PGs not winning championships" has anything to do with who the better player is.
lol exactly. The question is who is better between the twol. By their logic I guess we can take Danny Granger over Deron Williams in a debate between the two.
First of all, the question wasn't who was better. Second, I would probably take Granger, depending on salary. If it was a max salary for both, I wouldn't take either.
On the ESPN fan poll, its 53%-47%, in favor of Deron Williams. So it seems that Deron Williams is regarded as the superior player by most fans, and yet its Carmelo who gets all the hype. Suppose Williams went to New York and Carmelo went to the Nets. Would all the headlines be focusing on Deron Williams instead? Or is it that Anthony is over-hyped and over-rated by the national media?
