    The kind of "man" who won't be prosecuted for assault. 2.5 years + $1000 fine + legal fees isn't worth it.

    Just curious, in case I'm ever in a similar situation.

    If I'm in a public place like that and someone initiates a physical assault against me or someone I'm with, am I or am I not permitted by law to whoop his ass? And if so, to what extent?

    I assume the laws aren't the same as when you're in your home, where it is clearly OK to defend yourself and your family.

    self defense. you have the right to exercise reasonable self defense. You can't kill him or maim him.... but you can put your fists up and defend your being.

    actually i take that back... i think according to common law (the tort of battery) if when executing reasonable self defense, the assailant dies - you're still ok.

    this is all from a basic law class i took in the past - by no means am I an attorney and could be way off base.
