There are so many interesting aspects to this event as a social phenomenon and as an illustration of the range of differing ethical values. But it takes a little probing to get to them out.

I agree that there may have been a better way for them (girl and person filming) to handle the puppies but obviously, she doesn't live in the U.S. and cultures are different. Maybe they are justified where she lives. I don't know, do you? I have seen videos where more brutal actions take place and people around are perfectly fine with it. Does that mean we shouldn't be outraged or feel sympathy, no but I choose not to judge her or her actions, it's not really my place. Should anybody else, I don't think so but you're free to feel what you wish just as I am. I don't know her or the ways of life where she stays. If it is against the law where she lives, then she will be dealt with accordingly when/if she is pursued/prosecuted.

That's fine but like I said, I see points on both sides of the story. I think I just got looped in with drox and everybody started going after me as well, which is fine although I do find it funny. Why? Because just like you and everybody else who has posted in this thread is entitled to their opinion, so am I really. Drox is entitled to think what he wishes as well, even if it is that people shouldn't get in an uproar about this he's entitled to that opinion and guess what, you don't have to follow along with his thinking and can even ignore him if you wish. If you don't agree with it, fine there is nothing wrong with that.

I just see that there are two sides and I happen to agree with neither but see valid arguments in both.

The only saving grace for this board is hoping that EVERYBODY's first response was emotional.

If it wasn't, then I don't know what to say.

I apologise for bumping this, but I can’t really let this comment pass. I’m assuming there are no rat owners here so I guess it's up to me to respond to the comment below:

It isn’t capable, huh? And why is that – because you’ve never owned a rat in your life so your completely ignorant statements are regarded as fact? Perhaps I should refer you to some psychological experiments that show rats have this “thought and logic” in spades. Rats are also quite clearly capable of forming relationships with their owners.

Perhaps you should actually know about a thing or two about the animals first before you go judging their sentience. First off, you do not give an actual definition of sentience so where do we draw the line here? Is a dog sentient because it can be trained and follow commands (ohhh right, so can a rat)? Because it is self-aware enough? I’m not sure about chickens, but you’ll have chicken owners claim otherwise based on what they’ve seen, I’m sure. However, I have owned rats before and your statement regarding them is extremely ignorant, almost like you’ve gone off the bat based on little to no knowledge about them.

Rats are very intelligent and social animals. They form bonds with each other, this is most evident in rough and tumble play and grooming. They can also get depressed when their cagemate dies. They actually laugh when tickled. Studies have shown they are capable of limited metacognition, and it is even arguable that they can form dreams . Rats can be trained to do a variety of tricks, this shows they have at least some form of problem solving ability. In the wild, rats are smart enough to avoid traps or steal the bait without getting caught – this requires a level of thinking that far exceeds your ridiculous statements of them. Oh, and the domesticated variety are also very affectionate critters – some people even equate them to small dogs. Now tell me, based on all this information I’ve given you, are rats still “non-sentient” based on your definition?

And the “99% of its actions” statement – did you just make this up? Hard wired? What? This is ridiculous. The very fact that rats can actually learn from certain situations tells us there is more than just “hard-wiring”. If you’re going to contend against that, then you might as well say everything a dog does is “hard wired” too.

If a dog is sentient, than rats certainly are, based on observed behaviour and their capacity to learn new things and/or problem solve. Honestly, what you’ve said here was incredibly ignorant and you needn’t bother if you’re not going to actually do the research beforehand.

BarryL- that's very interesting about rats. Fascinating, really. I love learning about animal intelligence.

I don't think you should get up in arms about a comment from a guy who doesn't know how to properly punctuate the plural of 'dogs'.

    Rats make awesome pets. :)

While not as interactive as a dog, to deny them 'sentience' when they actually demonstrate what fits its so called 'definition' in the first place, is just being stupid.

Agreed. This board has the lowest troll rate I've ever seen. And the highest rat-lover rate, too. So you may have found your own message board nirvana, BarryL.
