Wait, children still play outside? I thought social networking killed recess.

I don't know you're financial status, or the neighborhood you live in, but a brand new goal will only run you 70-200 dollars. If nothing else buy them a new one and lock yours. Maybe call a few of the parents to get them to pitch in.

On my street it seems like everyone has a goal in their driveway. There aren't any courts in the suburbs.

jeez man it's just some kids wanting to play.

I can understand being worried about liability though, so some simple forms might be a good idea. Similarly, set some ground rules like "no playing after 5pm" or whatever. If they break the rules a few times, do what the pictures suggest.

In other words, don't be a grouch unless the kids force you to be a grouch.

    Damn, unexpectedly hilarious thread.

I was one of those kids back in the day. We didn't like the family who had the only adjustable goal on the block, so we'd use it without their persmission, and scatter like cockroaches when we saw them coming.

It sucks, but in this day and age, the liability is just not worth the risk. You really should put a stop to this entirely. I would admire you for trying to give them some time to play, but I sure wouldn't. Talk to the parents, then talk to the kids, if that fails, just lock the goal and avoid the kids altogether.

See, my neighborhood, the price of homes range from 110k - 180k. Not a horrible low end starter neighborhood but at the same time not high end either, I would say entry/mid level. You have some young couples like me, (early 30s) who have children but mainly I would say parents in their 40's who have kids that are between 8 - 12 years old.

What I dont want is these kids to hate me or think I'm mean and grow the balls to start vandalizing my property a few years from now when they are in middle school/high school. So i'm trying to be cool, but at the same time put my foot down. So far telling them to ask for my permission has worked as I haven't seen them play without asking me yet but now it's annoying that they come by and ask every week.

Probably not a good idea to play shirts/skins.

It happened to me when we first bought our goal. I picked out one of the kids and asked him to help me out. I told him that my wife and I slept during the day and that the basketball kept us awake, and that if he could help us out if appreciate it. It worked for the most part and I'm still really cool with the kid.

Just keeping dunking when they're playing with you. Dont take one jump shot and after a while they will get tried of losing. If that doesnt work tell their bad asses you want some alone time on your rim.

Or over scheduling. I look at my cousins who are 7 and 9 schedules and they have far busier lives than me.

As far as for the OP problem talk to the kids, their parents and your neighbors about setting up a schedule. I am sure your other neighbors don't enjoy having screaming kids playing basketball all the time on your hoop either.

if it is in your driveway then you are definitely liable even without your permission. Business Law (which could be different now) states that even if you have barb wire electric fence around your house, if you have anything inside your property that attracts CHILDREN then you are liable. Children being the key word which probably means 12 and under.

You and your wife really sleep during the day? That's awesome. You must be doing really well for yourself as a comedian.

    EDIT

By liable I mean if they get into your property and get hurt.

As an aside, stuff like this pisses me off.

What a stupid, litigious society we live in.

This thread reminded me of how much of an ass I was growing up by going to 3 different houses on my street to play on their goals. I kinda feel bad about it now. Oh well, I don't live on that street anymore.
