I've got a question about Langhi.

I know this is really way too early to be talking about, but I wanted to bring it up while I'm thinking about it.

Let's assume for a moment that Langhi ends up being a very valuable piece to the Rockets team -- not superstar obviously, but a solid role player. I know that's not a given based on one good Rocky Mountain Revue game, but let's assume he proves over the course of this year to be a valuable piece to the puzzle for the Rockets. Since we'll have some salary cap space next year, would you rather go ahead and sign him to a new contract (again, assuming he will be worth it) or take a chance on going through the whole Mobley thing again when his contract is up at the end of his second year?

I don't really want to hear all of the "I don't think he'll be worth it" and blah, blah, blah. We're assuming for the sake of this post that he turns out to be a second round steal. Give him a new contract (not a giant contract, but a good raise) that assures that we have his Bird's rights when he does become a free agent or take our chances on being able to sign him after two years?

I am just assuming that a team who has the cap room can go ahead and give a second year, second round player a contract extension and pay them more money. Am I right about that?

I'm not talking about breaking the bank on him, but I would rather give the guy a new contract and somewhat of a raise rather than having to try to resign him after his two year deal is up.

How I wish the Rockets would have been in the position to do that with Mobley.

I think that we should not, even if it is allowed and Langhi is worth it. If we have cap space, I think it should be used to draw in outside talent and we'd just take our chances with Langhi leaving. Even if he turns out to be good, will he be $4 million good (very roughly what we could pay him in an early bird). If we completely strike out in the FA market (like Chicago), and we've got nothing better to do with our cap-space, then why not? Sure.

I would try to unload Walt Williams this summer in order to create additional cap space in 2001. That way, the Rockets could sign a big FA to a max salary contract and still have enough left over to give Langhi a new contract. If Langhi does have a solid rookie season and a big time 2nd yr, then a Cuttino situation could easily re-surface. A player with his size and his skills can draw a lot of attention on the open market with a couple of solid yrs under his belt. I would say do everything possible to unload Walt, then the Rockets will have the cap room to ink a big time FA and still could give Langhi a new extension.
