Pistons to retire Dennis Rodman jersey

    Associated Press

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons plan to retire Dennis Rodman's No. 10 during a halftime ceremony later this season.

Rodman, the eccentric rebounding specialist who helped the Pistons win NBA titles in 1989 and 1990, will be honored April 1 when the Pistons host the Chicago Bulls, a team Rodman won three championships with from 1996 to 1998.

Detroit rookie Greg Monroe currently wears No. 10 and will be allowed to keep doing so.

Rodman averaged 8.8 points and 11.5 rebounds in 549 games with the Pistons. He was the league's defensive player of the year in 1990 and 1991.

The increase of RPG from 1990-91 to 1991-92 is SICK.

Could have done with out the second picture.

He was a great defender, great rebounder. Definite knucklehead though.

One of my favorite photos is of him being horizontal, diving for a ball. He was a good three or four feet off the ground.

Best of all, he broke Pip's jaw!

yeah about time he got some respect.

guess he is the type of player that gets lost behind all the 'stars' on the team. without him, no way the pistons/bulls would of won a championship. He filled in grant's shoes really well and his battles against malone were epic.

I remember phill was saying that he could party all night long and come back and still grab like 12-15 rebounds. just unbelievable athelet.

Rodman entered the league at 25. He was in top shape and just peaking when most were simmering down and about to retire.

Lol what the hell? Is that supposed to downplay his achievements? Not everyone in the league joined the same year he did so why would it matter where his physical peak was when he joined?

Exactly, look at the guys that he was ahead in rebounds in the 91-92

    1. Dennis Rodman-DET 18.7
    2. Kevin Willis-ATL 15.5
    3. Dikembe Mutombo-DEN 12.3
    4. David Robinson*-SAS 12.2
    5. Hakeem Olajuwon*-HOU 12.1
    6. Rony Seikaly-MIA 11.8
    7. Greg Anderson-DEN 11.5
    8. Patrick Ewing*-NYK 11.2
    9. Karl Malone*-UTA 11.2
    10. Charles Barkley*-PHI 11.1

umm, most went on to retire about the same time as Rodman except for DJ Seikaly and Greg Anderson, so I don't get the whole "he was physically at his peak while the rest were on their decline". Umm I see 4 MVPs on that list alone

18 REBOUNDS he freaking AVERAGED, thats pretty incredible.

...u do realize rodman was an undersized pf.

he didnt just get tons of rebounds cus he was in top shape and played against guys who were smaller and weaker than him...

Rodman was a great defender too.

I believe the lack of respect he got was because he wasn't a scorer and that he got known more for his outside the court antics in his later years.

Without Rodman, the Bulls and Pistons don't win championships.. and David Robinson doesn't win the MVP with the Spurs that year

Respect to Rodman. Should be HOF also.

The only man I saw f!ck with Larry Bird's step back jumper.

And that was just the beginning. Rebounding machine.

and then,,,,yes, he f!cked with Malone's mind. That was so fun to watch. To this day I think he was not just talking **** in Malone's ear but was doing homo talk. "Hey Karla, that's a strong elbow you just gave me. I like it. Can you hit me on the ass, too. I have some handcuffs. I like it when you butt me out of the way. You're ass is tight. Do it again."

LOL! I could actually see Rodman doing that and throwing Malone off his game. But all props to Rodman. He should be in the HOF. No player today rebounds like the Worm did. 18 boards a game? I think Howard tops out at around 15 per. I'm glad Rodman is getting some recognition.

I wonder how many rebounds Olajuwon could have averaged per game if that's all he focused on. Rodman exerted zero effort on the offensive side of the ball which allowed him to put everything he had into D and rebounds.

I'm not saying he's not a great player, but I think players like Barkley and Olajuwon could have put up those type's of rebounding numbers if that's all they focused on. Barkley not so much in the D area though.

It's tough to play great D and go for 18 rebounds in a game. Combine this with the fact that Rodman was basically a small forward/undersized PF and his achievement becomes more incredible. Throw in the fact that he was going up against outright beasts in an era where some of the toughest and roughest guys of the past 30 years played and it becomes even more incredible. He had guts to go inside against some of the best rebounders and most physical players while he himself was undersized in comparison.

I didn't like a lot of his antics, but the guy was incredible at what he did.
