Here's the text of the article...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A vehicle owned by former University of New Mexico men's basketball star and current Houston Rocket Kenny Thomas was recently involved in an alcohol-related accident, police said.

Police reports show Thomas, who suffered minor injuries in the Sept. 28 single-vehicle crash, was not driving.

Police said the SUV was headed north on University Boulevard when it struck the right curb and rolled. The driver, Joseph Sanchez, was arrested for drunken driving.

According to a police report, Sanchez told officers he was driving because ''Mr. Thomas was drinking earlier and that (Sanchez) knew where they were going.''

''I wasn't driving,'' Thomas told the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday. ''Everything is in the police report.''

Sanchez's attorney, Rudy Chavez, said the accident was unavoidable because of the weather conditions. He said rain had made city streets slick.

Chavez said the SUV hydroplaned, hit a curb, blew a tire and flipped on its side. In addition to Thomas, two women who were in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

''It's really fortunate nobody was seriously hurt,'' Chavez said. ''One of the things that's bad is Kenny's been doing work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and he did what he thought was right in giving his keys to a friend. ... Kenny and one of the others said they'd been drinking, but Joe indicated he was fine.''

The police report said Sanchez's blood-alcohol level later tested at 0.14 and 0.13 percent. The legal limit in New Mexico is 0.08.

Thomas had a highly publicized DWI arrest in April 1998 in Albuquerque while playing for the Lobos. He served two days in jail and started working with MADD. He has held charity golf tournaments and youth basketball camps for the organization during the past three years.

OK, so Kenny was intoxicated, so he gives his keys to somebody that was also drunk? That makes sense...

It's also weird that it took 20 days to report this. Usually, this stuff is on news wires the next day...

Thanks DC and A-Train. Any ideas why it was altering my type? When I would go into edit, it would have it down correctly, but when I would save changes, it would alter it again...

Two things - the link you're trying to post is bad. Maybe it wasn't when you posted it, but it's "File Not Found" now. Remove the "sports." in the front of the URL and it's fine.

Secondly, it's only altering how the full URL is displayed, not how it's linked. The link goes exactly where you intended it. The "..." keeps people from posting long, long URLs that would stretch the screen out too far horizontally and mess up threads.

Any chance neither of them were drunk and it was actually the SUV who was smashed off it's face.... SUVs are made for bourbon :D

I read the original article on the Albuquerque Journal website, and it pretty much mirrored the one posted here, plus a couple of additional details, like they had just been to a fast food restaurant, the women sustained injuries to arms and legs, etc. It also pointed out that one of the women had not been drinking.

It just seems funny that KT would hand the keys to a friend that was drinking, when there was someone else who hadn't. Maybe she's not a good driver or there were other reasons she didn't drive.

    :(

I think I'd rather trust my vehicle with a drunk guy than a sober woman. :)

    awwww,
kenny is such a good guy. actually, hes a punkass. im sure that kenny had nooooo idea that the driver had been drinking. maybe he was taking shots in the bathroom while no one was looking.... my guess is that kenny was probably driving. i was talking to my lab partner the other day who played football for UNM his freshman year. apparently, he lifted weights with kenny, and kenny was a huge a$$hole to everyone (and though i dont mean fat, that was true, too). anyway, lets ship this guy off while we can get something for him.

by the way, he said urlacher was cool. later.

That's a serious allegation there. That thought had crossed my mind too, but I'm guessing that would require police cooperation, which doesn't seem too likely, especially given the 1998 incident.

I was going to point out to Lobo that some guys are so chauvinist, they'd rather get themselves killed than have a woman drive. Fortunately, A-Train filled in for me to prove the point. :D
