For those of you who don't listen to Ryen Rusillo's podcast, NBA Today, today's show became very Rocket heavy mid way through.

Rusillo touches on a lot of subjects that are echoed here on this board weekly (Melo, Morey as a GM, Brooks' contract situation, Martin/Scola's trade value, how awesome Lowry is, etc).

    Definitely worth a listen. Enjoy

There's a mistake often with Daryl Morey. He IS a basketball guy, not ony a MIT guy. He plays and follows basketball since he was a child, he can be a stats freak but also must know something about this. A little tired of hearing the same kind of comments about him, it seems like he came from the MIT direct to the Rockets, like he doesn't know a damn about the game and focus all his management on his nerdy stats.

I don't understand why its one or the other -- you're a "basketball" guy, or you're a "stats" guy. We can disagree with Morey's management style or decision making, but I don't see what it has to do with whether he is a basketball guy or not.

Pat Riley was doing plus-minus and player efficiency ratings with the Lakers back in the 80s. Dean Smith was calculating offensive and defensive efficiency for his teams in the 60s. They can go together.

JVG seems to get along with Morey well enough to speak at his sports analytics conference a couple years ago. Seems he had fun, too.

Jose Mourinho is the best soccer coach in the world

He never played, he decided to be a coach in his 20'th.

Right now he calls himself a SPECIAL ONE and no one can say anything to him cause this guy is for real and he's winner, motivator, he's exceptional in tactics, he's players coach also but he never ever was a player, cause he said that he sucked tremendously

If Morey can win with Rockets - everyone would just shut up about him as a stats guy, MIT guy or smth else

But before it happens, he had to live with that. Even if it's stupid.

Russilo hit the nail on the head.

Morey has done a phenominal job creating a team around a Yao Ming he did not have a hand in bringing to the Rockets.

With that said, he can only be expected to do so much with having his franchise player on the bench for 2 straight years. The last time Yao was playing, the Rockets had a nice push.

Why whould a GM be a basketball guy? History shows that the best ballers are the worst GM's (MJ and Isiah Thomas). Ex-players often construct a team with bias based on the way they see the game or they played the game back in their day. Non-player GM's can actually look at the team makeup objectively.

Interesting perspective. I would like to know what he was talking about with Jeff, I don't remember him saying anything bad about Daryl.

It was a reference to the Henry Abbot interview the week before. Abbot is a numbers guy and was arguing he'd rather have Kevin Martin in the clutch than Kobe because he is a more efficient shooter.

    Ryen was mocking him.
