Didn't the Knicks offer us Randolph for their pick about 2 months ago and we turned it down? What has changed since then for us to want him now?
I think Daryl hesitated because the pick could turn out to be in the lottery. Now, if the deal were part of something bigger or better? Maybe something to get us Nene? Or maybe the timing was simply wrong. You know how Morey likes to squeeze other teams until they pop. I.e., the deal wasn't made at the trade deadline, so the other team wasn't desperate enough. Not to mention the unresolved pipe dream of Carmelo. Although maybe he can shoehorn his way into a 3-way deal that betters the Rockets, even without Carmelo coming here. Lots of maybes, hunh?
I was speaking in general terms about his position. In other words, play him at the four rather than the SF spot as leeb has sometimes suggested. There is definitely a logjam at almost every position -- I'm sure we'll open up some roster spots one way or another come the deadline.
Nothing. In fact, the knicks have played much worse since then so we should be even more hesitant to give them their pick back.
I'm well aware that this guy has a ton of talent, yes he's been coached by Dantoni and Nelson and they may have hurt his growth some. So why is it this guy can't get off of the bench on two bad teams? If he was as good as some of you think, Randolph would be playing. Difference makers find their way on to the court. I'm not opposed to the Rockets making a play for Randolph, just not sure he's worth the hype or a first round pick.
He is 21... 1. Ricky Rubio-20 2. Jimmer Fredette-21 3. Terrence Williams-23 4. Anthony Randolph-21 5. Hasheem Thabeet-23 Let's run & gun until we get a top draft pick...
I would do this deal if it gets us Randolph and Nene. How bad do they want it? not sure it's that bad.
To me, it's another Terrence Williams situation. Watching the kid (TW/AR) play, you can tell he's damn talented and can do things that not a lot of players can (at his size). For what would be a late teens/20s 1st round pick, I think you absolutely deal it for a talent like Randolph. BBS members jump on 'tankers' because there is no guarantee in a top pick. There's a heck of a lot less of a guarantee in the latter part of the first round. I understand the 'what if NY sucks' hypothetical; but I don't think we should pass on that kind of talent that is available now in hopes that some major injury or trade will de-rail the NY train in the future. As Morey said, it's not about whether you have a spot for the guy. It's the fact that he's available now and you might not get another chance to acquire him.
like I said, I like Randolph's skill level. I'm not opposed too the Rockets making a play, there would have to be significant changes made. We don't need another TWill coming over for a first and then being the 12th guy off of the bench. If we are getting rid of some of this redundant talent and or netting Nene in the same return while helping The Knicks acquire Melo as ballplayer stated, then I'm all for it.
Jopatmc....I'm not coming down on you but I felt the need to address some of what you and others still harp on when it comes to AR First off as far as him asking for a $10 mil extension, here's the quote that started it "The San Jose Mercury News writes that the Warriors recent desire to shop forward Anthony Randolph coincided with agent Bill Duffy's mention of a contract extension. Two sources told the Mercury News that Randolph's camp is thinking about an extension and that loose figures mentioned by Duffy are five years and $60 million." This rumor was never substantiated. Bill Duffy has been around for awhile (he's also Yao's manager). Don't you think he would know better than to ask for a contract extension when his client is still on his rookie deal? AR has been quoted as saying that that rumor was totally false. Secondly, the attitude problem. Can you give an example of when AR has displayed this so called attitude problem? Was it when he scowled at Yao after dunking on him? Or when he blocked someone's shot and screamed at the top of his lungs? Other than that, where's the proof that he has an attitude. (or is a knucklehead, Stromile Swift part II or whatever the most recent euphemism is) I'm pretty close to several members of AR's management team. Not one of them can tell me about a time where AR got into a fight with a coach, teammate or GSW staff member. (disagreement with a coach is another thing but there's not an athlete on the planet who hadn't verbally got into with his coach at one time or another). AR came into the league wanting to let other teams know that they had a problem on their hands. That's where the scowls and screams come from, not from having an attitude or being a thug. Passion to play the game and excel and attitude problem are two completely different matters. Name the last team that won a championship with a team full of Battiers' and Chuck Hayes' attitude wise? You always need a player that plays with some fire and passion. Off the court he's as laid back and humble as they come and as my friends say, pretty much shy around a lot of people. I'm laughing at the fact that you say he needs a father figure because AR grew up as a military brat. Both his mom and his dad have served their country. From what my friends tell me, he was raised to focus on his education just in case playing ball didn't work out. Is he Shane Battier......no but the kids pretty intelligent. His parents were also tough on him as you probably would expect. I'm not trying to write the kids bio but I just get tired of the new breed of fan thinking thinking that because they read something on the internet, it must be true. Growing up watching ball back in the day, I could have cared less about a guys perceived attitude or what he does in his off time. Maybe in this day and age of Reality TV, twitter and facebook obsessiveness, people feel that they "know" these players and can make an accurate commentary on what they are feeling based on a screenshot. Or maybe it's that 85% of "fans" have never picked up a ball before but obsess over PER and sh** or the fact that they give trophy's out to losers as well as winners now-a-days. Don't know, but fans today need to learn how to focus on the game and turn the computer off sometimes. Anyways, sorry about the rant. Bottom line is that every team needs a game changer. With GSW, AR proved that he could be offensively and defensively. If we can grab him now and work with him (it's mostly confidence at this point) the sky's the limit. Here's a couple of interviews showing AR doing his thug-thizzle lol One more thing, to address all of the people saying if he was so good why are all these teams giving up on him...GSW didn't want to include AR in the trade for David Lee. The Knicks threatened to take the deal off of the table if they didn't include him. AR went to the Knicks and re-injured his ankle and missed the first two weeks. By the time he got healthy, the Knicks were rolling (W's wise). Part of him not playing is because Dantoni didn't want to mess up the chemistry. The other part is because AR was pressing when he came back and making mistakes. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UxqIUV-Jyxc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-podG_MMXGA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5-g7zvV1Hbs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Good points. I think the attitude stuff has been overblown. Yes, I do see attitude on the court. And most of the players that played for Nelly had attitude problems. I think Nelly took advantage of his tenure the last 3 or 4 years of his career and really screwed with some of the players' heads. Randolph has an attitude. But it's nothing that cannot be adjusted. I don't believe it is fatal to his basketball career. Since you seem to be so familiar with him, I'd like to know, why can't he get off the bench for D'antoni? What's happening to him in NY?
Thanks Jo....man your guess is as good as mine at this point. I think it's a combination of a lot of things. #1 is that he really doesn't fit in with what the Knicks are trying to do. He's a hybrid 3/4. Dantoni has never coached anyone with that skill set. It looks good on paper but I just don't think you can plug that into his system and make it work. I know for a fact that he's frustrated with the fact that he's not playing but also because he's not back to where he wants to be (explosion etc). I just think he's trying too hard (in practice at least) and not letting the game come to him. They did hype his arrival up so maybe he's trying to live up to it. Either way I just hear that his game is just off right now. Also, the one person in the rotation who's spot he could probably take is Shawne Williams and D'Antoni says that that won't happen because of Shawne's ability to stretch the floor (dude's shooting almost 51% from the three).
