It seems like the majority of this forum plays categories. I don't know how you guys do it -- I absolutely loathe categories. Points seems like so much more fun to me. I don't want to go 7-3 at the end of a head-to-head week.. I want to be 1-0. I don't want to go into Sunday thinking, "I need 6 more rebounds, 3 more assist and my guys to outscore his by 15 and I'll win!" .. I'd rather just have them rolled into one category with a numerical valuation assigned to each. That way, going into Sunday I can look and see, "I'm down 77 points but I have two more guys than him." I understand that points league do not punish players for being poor FT shooters (unless you count lost opportunity) or for having a bad FG%. But I still find it much more enjoyable. So why do you like a categories league better than a points league?
Blah. Why? Because you pick up more obscure guys? Guys like Reggie Evans get no run in my league, but I bet they're starting for a lot of category teams. The only strategy I want to deal with is putting the best overall stat stuffer in my lineup.
I've realized alot throughout these years that I really hate H2H categories. You can have the best team and end up losing in the playoffs just because you have an off week while your opponent has a fluke week. I'd rather play points/roto league but my friends continue to convince me.
For one, it all depends on how you build your team. You don't just try to nab the best overall player, you want to dominate key areas or be well rounded.
It's more fun competing against people on a week-to-week basis. Yes, fluke weeks can happen.. it's part of fantasy. The Celtics can lose to the Cavs; doesn't mean the Cavs are the better team.
I had this exact thing happen in last season Aussie Rules Football fantasy league. Finished the season something like 15-1, minor premiers (who get a double chance in the playoffs/finals) and proceeded to get whooped two weeks in a row, wham, bam thank you mam! I like the categories cause it means you need to think a little more and have a more rounded roster. And yes it des enable you to go and get some obscure guys or chop and change if particular players are having a hot/cold streak.
I'm with you, man. I hate hate hate category-based leagues. FP is just a lot more fun for all sports -- football, basketball and baseball.
Roto leagues take more upfront skill and long term investment in managing slots. I enjoy h2h leagues because you can still be competitive with a few high ranked duds. It also mimics the playoff structure (which some consider flukey) and you get to talk more trash.
exactly. in a points league the draft is everything. if you dont have a good team out of the draft, how can you get better? who will trade a guy who averages 40 fan points for a guy who averages 35? in a category league, if you can make crafty moves to get better. even with less talent on your team you can gear yourself to win 5 stats, by punting others and thus staying very competitive. but who cares really? to each his own. some people like it simplified, other like the game to be more complex. i prefer the complex version.
Well, you don't trade 40 for 35. You trade 37 and 35 for 40. I've made 5+ trades this year in my points league (I'm a BIG trader; thanks Morey). It's pretty easy to make trades in points leagues. I think the points trades would also be more realistic than the categories deals, since categories you are usually only looking to satisfy one category in a deal. "OK, if I just give up on rebounds for the year, I can trade.." Some realism! I just hate categories. You're starting a bunch of scrubs because he can do one thing really well. Having NBA League Pass, I like to watch my players on my team. I enjoy watching Zach Randolph or Steve Nash rack up the points -- I would kill myself if I had guys like Reggie Evans who just do one thing. I can't watch that -- much more entertaining for my guys to have a good overall game vs. rooting for them to get a certain # in a category. And I like being 1-0, not 6-4. It's 2/3 and 'categories' are still whack.
