    I found this at nbatalk.com. http://www.sportstalk.com/nba/freeagency/freeagency_7-24-00.shtml

    3. RASHARD LEWIS
The Skinny: We're assuming he does a one year deal with Seattle this year.  Another year at this improvement rate and he'll get the max he couldn't get this year.

Interested Teams: Seattle, Miami, HOUSTON and about every other team in the NBA

    Impact Factor: 8

    Forecast: Duncan to the MAX

Looks like his brother may have been right. That one year deal doesn't seem farfetched now, and NBAtalk already knows of Houston's interest. It's a good sign toward the future IMO if we can't acquire Rashard this summer.

Something I learned recently from the CBA FAQ is that the Qualifying Offer Exception (the one that can pay Lewis or Mobley the $4 million) can only be for one year. So -- to my understanding -- if Mobley or Lewis want to get as close to what they're worth from their current teams for this season, they will both have to be FAs next offseason. Otherwise, they'd have to sign for a $2.5 million exception.

So if Mobes signs with us this year, he would be a free agent again next year? All our free agent money could be spent on Cat and Rashard. With as many picks as we have, we should trade up as high as we can and pick a 4or5 in the draft. I would be completely happy with that.
    Starting lineup:
    Francis
    Shandon
    Rashard
    Cato
    Curry
    and Cuttino

Now that is a killer team for the next 15 years.

It was my understanding that the mid level offer had to be a 2 year deal. Am I mistaken on this?

Currently, I can't get into the FAQ, so I can't give you the link. But from what I remember, the mid-level exception starts around $2.5 million and has to be a minimum for two years. If Cat takes that then we won't have to address this question again until the year after next. However, it is in his interest not to take that. His interest lies in the Qualifying Offer Exception which is 108% of the league average salary, or about $4 million. That can only be for one year, so we will have to sign him again next year. But signing him next year should be no problem if he signs this year because we'll have his Bird Rights.

All the same is true for Rashard Lewis. He will have Bird Rights next offseason. But he will also be a completely unrestricted FA. So, if he wants to forgo Seattle's money to return to Houston, he'll be free to do so, unlike this year. We should have cap-room to do it. According to Davo, we should have $6 million so far and we may end up clearing more before then (or losing some). Since we can sign Lewis before Cat, we should be able to get both despite the cap. Unless, of course, we go after someone else. But, if we want Lewis next offseason, our chances are good.

I trust other capologist types will be policing my work to make sure I'm not misled.

    Juan V,

    A couple of points:

    1. A qualifying offer is just the amount that you have to offer a player by June 30th in order to retain the right of first refusal. It is not the actual amount that the player has to sign for. Once you've made this qualifying offer you can go negotiate whatever deal that you can work out under the cap.

    2. The rules for the qualifying offer are :

Greater of 125% of previous salary or the minimum salary plus $150,000

That wouldn't come close to $4M for Mobley. The way that we could pay Mobley $4M is through early bird rights. Those contracts have to be for a minimum of 2 years.

Hi! I'm a newbee and the previous post was just to check whether it worked (Don't take it as a offence clutch, I had a hard time realising why I couldn't write posts: I was writing my Username and the passwords in capital letter.)

From what I know, the salary will count if we are UNDER the cap even if he has the bird right. So signing Cuttino should be done last after we signed Webber, Lewis, draftee or whatever. If Lewis and Webber are prepared to take less then this should be my team.
    PG: Francis/Norris
    SG: Anderson/Mobley
SF: Lewis/draftee(if we have 4picks, preferably Morris)
PF: Webber/Collier/maybe Thomas if he isn't shipped out
C: Curry or Woods depending on whether we can move up/Cato, Cato might be the starter for first couple of years if we draft Curry.

Prediction: Don't have to make one.

It's doubtful that if Cuttino is staying or perhaps even going we'll have enough money to sign Lewis and Webber under the cap, let alone convincing both to stay here.

But, on the bright side, you gave me a good idea-Cato and our pick (let's say somewhere between 10-13) would make pretty good bait for a top 3 pick (Curry, Woods, et. al). I've got a good feeling of Rashard signing a 1 year deal with Seattle, then landing here, if we were to get extremely lucky (our pick wins the lottery, Milwaukee pick falls into late lottery/just outside) We could have a pretty deadly lineup looking like Francis-Anderson-Lewis-Curry (or Collier...I still don't believe HSers are ready to start as rooks)-Cato, with Moochie, Mobley, (Yarbrough/Morris/Battier), Collier or Curry, and if we get Orlando's pick (late pick) Ken Johnson. This of course leaves Walter and Thomas as 11th and 12th man, which is not too bad. Now, look I've already gotten into some dreamcasting!

The more lefties on your team, the better.
Collier is Seven Foot and Left Handed. How can you go wrong?
    Trade or bench Kenny Thomas.

Lewis came out today said that he is going to sign with Seattle and it sounds like he will take the two year "early bird." The real bad news is not that Lewis is signing a two year deal, it's that Toronto will now go harder after Mobley.

    Sky/RT45,

Where did he say he was resigning? Just curious because I can't find it on any major news site.

The Sonics said so in a morning press release. The contract details were not released in the press release however sources close to the team report that it will be a two year deal.

    RT45,

I went to the seattletimes.com. I also went to Sonics message boards all over the internet. I checked Bskball, nbatalk.com, etc. and no one had anything on it. Something's fishy here.

OK. Maybe you'll be right, and I'm sorry if you are because I doubted a similar incident last week. But if the Sonics sent out a press release saying that, wouldn't you figure some place on the internet would know about it?

    Cat,

A friend of mine who is a big time Bulls fan emailed me the news about 30 minutes ago (boy is he upset at this year's off season). If you want to hear about it, KJR out of Seattle (which is owned by the Sonics) is mentioning the verbal agreement during their updates. If you are willing to sit through Mariners talk for a few minutes, you might just catch an update. http://kjram.com
