20/20 hindsight should've drafted ramon sessions at #54 instead of brad newley, but i agree with above posters - what's the point of this...
Dream was the best college player coming into the draft <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-2mPL_fcLO0" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe> He had it's called the 1986 Rockets who after going to the NBA Finals, had key members of team get banned for cocaine and the 2nd best player have a severe injury that ruined his career. that's what happened to his help. Luckily, there's that CLUTCH CITY story... and that inspired ONE PERSON to make a website for fans who love Clutch City..
I agree 100%. Sooooo many posts about Brooks' sucking or we need to trade him or bench him, etc. I feel the frustration and disappointment as much as the next guy. But, do you "give up" on a guy who has a proven track record? Although it was a small sample before the ankle injury (4.5 games), he WAS playing pretty well and seemed to have a good attitude - after the talk with Morey and his agent, regarding his contract. I think the frustration and bad body language has came from the frustration of not playing to the level he's accustomed to. That, as well as getting injured in a contract year, losing his starting job "to injury", the losing, trying to mesh with the second unit, etc. I hate seeing play after play break down and then him motioning for the isolation. But, I also notice the second unit not cutting hard or running off picks like the first unit, then there are times he has no choice but to run iso. We forget that was and still is a LARGE part of the offense (isolation for Brooks) and when he was on, it was OK. We'd ohhhh and ahhhhh at his drives or pull up J's and threes. Now, that they aren't going, it's extremely frustrating to watch. So, do you bench him? Durvasa showed a graph over the past two years. If I'm not mistaken, Brooks was right there with Martin on the offensive side/production. (didn't have time to study it). I think you have to believe that history is more of what he will do in the long run than a 20-25 game stretch of bad play. Still, sooner or later, something has to be done (benched, traded, starting again, etc.). So many people jump to making moves based on what a player is doing now as opposed to what the player is capable of - based on history, not potential. One thing I'm NOT ready to do is hand the backup role to Ish Smith. I love his potential. I LOVED his play early on. He LOOKED TO PASS. Too often since Brooks came back however, he looks to SHOOT. I'm sure he wouldn't force things if he was in the rotation and would go back to looking to create for others as he did when he was getting consistent minutes. Brooks is playing with a similar mentality of trying to force things as he knows he's playing (for him) limited minutes. You can actually SEE him thinking - and not reacting or playing. He's always been a volume shooter and had the green light. Now, he'll turn down an open shot 'cause he's missed a couple in a row, then put himself in a worse situation and force a worse shot. He's just totally off and out of rhythm and it's hard to watch. It is comical though to read the "Brooks sucks" posts over and over. It's like so many of these guys JUST started watching the Rockets over the last two months. Even though I'd get FRUSTRATED with Rafer's shooting, he ran the offense well and played good defense. I wasn't happy when he was traded and we were handing the offense to Brooks. I thought we'd get killed with point guards posting him up. He won me over pretty quickly. And, contrary to what many think, he plays decent post defensel. He struggles getting through or around picks on the perimeter badly. I'm ready for a trade or change or him to get his groove back though - and it can't come soon enough! But, the guy doens't "SUCK"....lol. He's a proven scorer in this league, demonstrated the ability to hit big shots, play effectively in big playoff games and yes... run the offense well. (check assists compared to Lowry's over the last two years). Winning cures everything - and there's a lot more wrong with this team than just Aaron Brooks. There's more frustration with him because he's proven he's capable of so much better play.
Aaron Brooks was actually a really good pick. He would've fit perfectly in with Yao and McGrady. A point guard who can space the floor. Sadly, they got injured.
LOL obviously we would have drafted Marc Gasol and Tiago Splitter if we could turn back time. While we're at it, we should have drafted both MJ and Hakeem. We probably also should have fired Rudy, hired Greg Pops when he was just starting out and drafted Dennis Rodman and Steve Kerr
Actually, we could have had both the Dream and Michael Jordan. Chicago wanted to trade their #3 (Jordan) and a quality player (I can't remember who but it may have been Pippen) for Ralph Sampson. We declined, reveling in the glow of the original Twin Towers.
The more I see it the more I believe Aaron was a fantastic pick there. Do you guys remember how out of the blue that pick was? Most reporters were ignorant of his talent and even a lot of us were like Aaron who? A lot of people cursed the pick too. With the Aaron and Carl pick was when Morey's image as a genius started to grow, I hope he can take it to another level in this fast approaching deadline! Out of all bolded players, you can make a point that AB is, when not blatantly better, as accomplished as them. This thread is wrong, in hindsight Aaron Brooks is definitely a lottery pick and arguably a top ten pick in that class as far as their careers have gone.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/news/2001/08/02/sayitaintso_rockets/#jordan Legend has it that Houston twice shied away from trading Ralph Sampson -- once to Portland for the No. 2 pick in '84 (which could have been Jordan) and again to the Bulls for Jordan after the '85-86 season. The Rockets, however, stuck with Sampson until 1987..... The Rockets, however, stuck with Sampson until 1987..... So we are both correct. BTW, my vote would have been for Tiago Splitter or Marc Gasol.
AB was a steal at the 26th pick, but it's hard to say whether I'd rather have AB or Marc Gasol. As others pointed out, AB had a huge impact on that Lakers series...but Marc might have been just as nice to have when both Deke and Yao went down and we sorely needed size. But I love AB and everything he's done for us...so I'm gonna say the bigger mistake was not taking DeAndre Jordan over Joey Dorsey. That would have let us have both our supremely talented scorer and that 7 foot shot blocker.
On draft night, I wanted Tiago or Marc. I was a little upset we didn't get one of those, maybe because I followed international bball at that time than I do now. But up to the point where manu stepped under Aaron, I was happy brooks was a Rocket. The guy can ball. As of now, I don't know what it is with aaron? Are his problems Mental? Lack of a contract? Lowry ahead of him in the rotation? Bullard always says he is not back to form. But recovering from injury should not take a toll on your BBall I.Q.
Dollar for Dollar I think we have gotta more than Les's money's worth out of a late first round pick. Any of those guys could have just as easily gotten injured and fell off for a season. None of them would have led us in scoring last year, and none of them have the talent or potential to average 25ppg over a season
