It's playing at Edwards Marquee/Weslayan and AMC Dunvale. I'm interested in seeing CF reviews for that one.
Scott Pilgrim vs the world - 8.5/10 Awesome movie. Completely different to anything I've seen. I thought it would suck and I don't particularly like Michael Cera. I recommend it.
Sozin's Comet. Finally got around to watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. Overall it was quite good. Sometimes the corniness was a bit much, but still the overall story was excellent. I thought the finale movie was quite good. It wrapped up things pretty well. I probably would have enjoyed a bit more at the end to wrap up the characters and their plotlines. Still it ended the Aang storyline quite well, and the four major fight scenes at the end were handled expertly, switching from one to another quite effectively. 8.5/10.
She's Out of My League 7/10 I didn't think it was going to be any good but I was thoroughly impressed and entertained. Alice Eve is attractive but isn't as drop dead gorgeous as the movie made her.
The Social Network - 72% Good film, entertaining and interesting. Definitely not Oscar material, though.
RED - Like it a lot. Normally movies don't keep my attention straight through... this was one of the few recently that did. Picked up from Redbox... my thoughts on that are a whole nother thread.
I must be missing it to. Portman shined in her role, but I just thought it dragged and dragged into a sub-par ending. Just saw Toy Story 3. It was really good for a kids movie. I liked it a lot.
Wrestling With Shadows 8/10 - Bret Hart was a bit of a drama queen about the whole thing, but pretty interesting documentary about an incident that I didn't know much about. The Pianist 10/10 - Can't believe I'd never seen this movie. Polanski is a child-raping pervert, but he sure did knock it out of the park with this one. Adrian Brody was stunningly good. The Social Network 6/10 - Not a bad movie, but not as great as everyone seems to think. I'm not sure if the material is worthy of the big screen. I think it would have made a better TV-movie.
Inception - 8.8/10 After being really disappointed with The Prestige and having a lot of the same people recommend Inception, my expectations were low. This movie was excellent, and far exceeded my expectations.
Forgot one: Restrepo - 8.5/10 Really good documentary that just documents, and doesn't try to make any particular point. It seems to do a great job of showing what life is like on the front lines in Afghanistan. You will end up with a lot of conflicted feelings at the end.
Chaos Theory - 7/10 i went into it thinking it was a comedy and was really disappointed half in because the laughs were few and far between. but then it started feeling more like a melodrama and didn't turn out to be that bad. it left me thinking about what my own choice would have been in the end.
Sideways (2004) 9/10 I just love a good road movie, and this is a damn good example of that genre. Lush cinematography and incredible acting by Paul Giamatti (I really liked him in American Splendor too, very underrated actor). I really identified with some of the mid-life angst as I've gotten older. This isn't a comedy though, more like an insightful blend of drama with bits of humor.
interesting. . I like The Prestige far more than Inception Anywho. Just watched LAYER CAKE - 7.5/10 Rocket River
Comparing this with Pirates of Silicon Valley is old. The dialogue between the two aren't even close.
127 Hours: Very interesting movie..it's a true story throught. I'll rate it 8/10 because of too much blood scenes near the end of the movie.
RocketRiver: I loved Layer Cake. Solid flick. That director really, really knows how to use music in his films. This weekend, the wife and I saw a lot of good movies: 1) The Social Network - 9/10 - Great dialoge, great performances all around and a very compelling story. Loved the way they played with narritive and kept jumping from the mediation scenes to the "origin" of the mediation. It was shot in a way that was always visually interesting, which isn't a surprise coming from David Fincher. Timberlake, who I thought was a bad actor, is really good. And Trent Reznor's score was kick-ass. 2) The King's Speech - 8.5/10 - Loved it. Beautifully shot and the performances were top notch. I'm a big Geoffrey Rush fan and he didn't dissapoint. Like The Social Network, it was about a subject that shouldn't have made for a visually compelling movie, but it ended up being exactly that. 3) The Other Guys - 7/10 - Redbox impulse rent. Very low expectations that were definitely exceeded. It was stupid and funny in a very good way. I thought Steve Coogan would bring more to the table, ala Russel Brand, but he was a bit of a let down. Oh yeah, and Eve Mendes is SMOKING hot. 4) Salt - 6.5/10 - Preposterous action movie that took itself too seriously. On the good side, since it was stocked with good actors and well staged action scenes, it was elevated. I'd compare it to Taken in that if you remove Liam Neeson from that movie, it's 60% worse. You take Liev Schrieber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Angelina Jolie out of this movie and replace them with lesser actors, it would be big-budget JCVD movie without the unintentional comedy that JCVD typically brings to the table.
Went to Redbox last night to get The Town, but it wasn't available, so I rented: Red - 6.5/10 - Entertaining, but not memorable flick, that kinda sits on the fence between action movie and action comedy. With the weakness in the action, it should have went more toward the comedy side.
