I love seafood gumbo and trying to find some new places.....I like Boudreux gumbo and the old shop in the houston Chron building, which is closed now....Any suggestions?
I love the gumbo at Pappadeaux and Ragin Cajun. They have the real dark, thin roux that I prefer. Places I avoid gumbo at are Jax's and Goode Co Seafood. They serve the really thick, lighter version that I think is terrible.
I always get the chicken, but Calliope's Poboy near downtown is great. Zydeco Cafe has been great too and has a good reputation, but the rue was overcooked last time I ate there.
Interesting...i used to work in the Calpine building close to this restaurant, but never seen it....is this place new
Relatively new. The owner is a UH entrepreneurship program grad (iirc) and it has imo the best Cajun food in town. Destroys Ragin-Cajun. http://www.bbscafe.com/news-and-press.php
Reef definitely has one of the best seafood gumbos in Houston. Very fresh. But it is $9. You can probably order it in the bar, if you don't want to get seated just for an appetizer. Treebeards downtown has some good gumbo. But no seafood gumbo.
do you like Roux-based Gumbo or Okra-based Gumbo? Pappa's is Okra-based..but there is a lot of fighting in Cajun country over which type is proper. ..for the record..I like Okra-based Gumbo.
in my opinion...pappadeaux has the best seafood gumbo ANYWHERE. i have friends from NOLA who can't believe they've been conquered by a houston chain...but even they admit it.
My brother-in-law, a Cajun, makes seafood gumbo far better than Pappadeaux's, Max. I find it hard to believe that there's not an eatery in Houston that can top Papa's, not that I don't like their gumbo. I do!
well ultimately it's a matter of opinion.... but i'll tell you, seafood gumbo is my favorite food by far. my wife's as well. there's no place i enjoy it more than pappadeaux's.
