My phone (LG Ally) got some sort of new update over the weekend and ever since then I'm having all kinds of problems getting calls, texts, emails, etc. Also I'm not able to end a call without turning the phone completely off. Also the dialpad no longer works. I've been reading up on it and apparently I got an update to 2.2 (even though I didn't want it). Everything I'm reading says I have to reformat the entire phone which means I have to lose all my contacts, apps, music, pics, texts, etc. Anyone else having similar problems with this stupid Android update? What good is an update if you can't use the ****ing phone?
Don't you have everything backed up though? I'm not sure why it messed up your phone. Was it rooted? I know the feeling though, it really sucks.
Verizon. The stuff I'm reading is saying that a factory reset might fix the problem(s). I just synced up everything in the 'account sync' menu. Does that mean I can recover everything after I do the reset? Also, I've seen reference to rooting a phone but I don't even know what that means. Pardon the stupid questions but this is my first smart phone.
Don't even think about rooting if it's the first time you've heard about it. Grab a free app that will assist in backing up your apps (backup manager or other) Back up all your pictures, videos, music, etc to your SD card or computer The account sync should have saved your contacts but not much else You could alternatively go into a Verizon store - they can temporarily back up your stuff while resetting your phone like they'll do when you buy a new phone and want your old stuff ported over to it.
The great thing about Android phones is you can sync up all your contacts into the "cloud". So if you get a new phone or it updates like that then all you have to do is resync it to your Gmail/Facebook/Exchange/Twitter account and your contacts will be back.
LOL, good point. Just saw some instructions on how to do it and......yeah, no. Any suggestions on a good backup manager? I see tons of them out there. So, if I do a factory reset, that won't affect anything I have on my SD card?
I manually updated my Samsung Vibrant to 2.2 a few days ago. I love it. My battery life is much better, being able to text message by a voice command is awesome, and best of all the ability to use my phone as a mobile hot spot is the bomb! Comcast is getting the big FU from me because I'm using just my phone for the internet in my house now.
I just got a Verizon HTC Incredible and also downloaded the 2.2 update a day ago. No problems here. My wife who has an HTC Evo also got the update a while back and no issues. Like others mentioned you can sync with Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc... But also you can download HTC Sync and sync your contacts, calendar, photos, music, and videos with your computer... http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1073&news_id=856
Enjoy it while it lasts. T-Mobile is going to start charging extra for that once they introduce the new Wi-Fi hotspot plans. So don't get carried away and cancel your internet.
Android 2.2's been out for months. The majority of Android phones have had it for a while now. Your problems have to do specifically with how well LG handled the update for your phone, especially since the Ally is a mid-range device. You won't find out anything from others who have 2.2 on other phones since it's specific to the Ally. If you do have to reset your phone, your contacts, calendar events will be synced back up as long as you don't have Google sync disabled. Any paid apps will be free for you to re-download. There's also apps on the Market that will backup your texts if you want. You could also wait for LG to issue an update to fix what they screwed up with their 2.2 update.
Hey, once you get that issue resolved you will realise android 2.2 is better. Adds more features, and its pretty standard on most new Androids, unless you have a galaxy s phone here in the u.s.a ... -__- Adobe Flash 10 capabilities is the best feature
when you created contacts, were you asked if you'd like to save to Google phone, sim, or phone? if you've been saving contacts under google you will be absolutely fine in regards to phone numbers. for pics, most android phones have sd cards that are used primarily for apps (must have 2.2+) and of course pictures, so save to sd card not internal memory.
Android 2.2 is called Froyo. Is this a new update for your phone? Because the newest build Android has for 2011 is the 2.3.2 Gingerbread. Anyways, you can try to reformat your sd card by first backing up your files (save to pc) do a hard reset (restore factory defaults), unmount your sd card, then hit the format button in your phone. If that doesnt work, format your sd card thru your computer using fat32 partitioning (android preferred method). If still no luck, I would root your phone just to be safe and not brick it. Flash a fresh copy of Android (whatever version you choose or had) and start from scratch. Save all your music and photos on your pc, sync all of your contacts with google and back up all of your apps wth something like titanium backup app thru market ( or you can just re download it thru market). You wont have to worry about adding contacts in or losing data you had. The only pain would be setting up your preferred settings again. Good luck.
No it won't affect your SD card. What I recommend you do is get the highest rated backup you find on the market, and back everything up. (Backup Everything seems to be a free popular app for this.) Try to move as many apps to your sd card as possible. Although theoretically you can re-download paid apps for free, some of them screw you on it. If you have a lot of apps, you can download an app that moves things to your SD card in batches (instead of having to move them one by one. I use App Manager Pro). Although you can back important stuff up with the device itself, I'm recommending you use the apps to do it because it's easier and less risky. You don't seem to be extremely familiar with all the little tricks (neither was I a while back) so the apps make it easier. You should be alright to do a factory reset then.
Okay, did the factory reset last night. I didn't lose anything except a few albums. All my contacts and pics were saved. I only had about 10 downloaded apps (I like to keep my phone clean) and they were all free, so I just downloaded them again no problems. Worked great for a little while, then once again, I couldn't receive calls or texts and I was unable to end calls without turning the phone completely off. So I powered off and took out the battery and haven't had any problems since. Yes, the Ally may be a POS but it's the best smartphone I could upgrade to for free...and I'm all about free. It's been a great phone before all this mess started. Hopefully they will put out some kind of a fix for these problems soon, as I'm reading that a lot of people (with the Ally) are experiencing them. Thanks for all the help. Rep has been handed out appropriately.
