Has anyone else seen the documentary? Blew my mind. I see it everywhere now.

They are not all Helvetica, just "Sans Serif" (without curly stuff) fonts.

Also, lots of other logos in there are other fonts. I was able to reproduce some of those. Microsoft's log has its font in ARIAL BOLD, with a bit of work.

    isn't that "Impact," not Helvetica?
helvetica is every airport, international signs, and the old IKEA font. the granddaddy of the lame-excuse-for-a-typeface-Arial.

arial is natty lite, to helvetica's 90-minute-ipa.

Typography rules probably dictate that certain things convert better. Nothing to see here.

    Yes, I've seen it.

Art & Copy is also good. Objectified, too.

    All on Netflix streaming.

It was probably one of the best documentaries about a font I've ever seen.

I'm a graphic designer and a class I took in High School really opened my eyes to Helvetica. It's basically the only typeface I ever use in my work.

An insightful documentary. Well thought out, multiple angles, history, some good design commentary on fonts form and function. Some hate it, some live by it, but no denying it's prevalence and power no matter how overused it is. I think that it's a testament to it's utility and perfection that fontographers have made hundreds of other faces and families that are all but indistinguishable from it in some caged attempt to provide the "new" helvetica.

That said, how did you not see Helvetica was everywhere BEFORE seeing it if you are aware of the font?

there is no doubt that helvetica gets a bad rap, except from graphic designers ;) however, there are those who prefer univers (me included) as it is a more modernized version, with better proportions and much better for body copy. i like the numerals better as well.

But it doesn't hurt to branch out. Especially if your work calls for it.

I know, RIGHT?!?!?! If there's anything that bothers me, it's that HELVETICA and UNIVERS look so much alike.

I can't sleep at night knowing that I might confuse the two in an advertisement. :(

I tend to agree, though "The Courier" was pretty riveting in its own right.

I felt the bitter sting of the Courier as it was ignominiously swept away with the advent of wordprocessing. Thrown to the dung heap like an old beat up Selectric. Kept on life-support by the tedious and cryptic WordPerfect reveal codes.

I almost shed a tear near the end with the arrival of the young upstart Calibri.

At times, I want to use CENTAUR, but I don't think people would recognize it. I'll wait to see if the web world begins using it. I'll know by the next few years, or so.... :(

Has anyone given Cambria a tria?

I typically use ARIAL (arial) for documents at work, and VERDANA (verdana) for personal documents.
