Here's the official press release: Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on ThunderCats, an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. ThunderCats is the newest series from WBA, joining Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: The Looney Tunes Show, MAD, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated and Young Justice. The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation. "In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation's first anime series, ThunderCats marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy," said Register. "The realism and dynamic visual style we've achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience." The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including The Animatrix, Gotham Knights and Halo Legends. WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter's expertise to give the ThunderCats characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series. "We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ThunderCats to life," said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. "This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies — high production values and great storytelling — toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience." Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C's use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, ThunderCats characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations. The new ThunderCats will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O's ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost — takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode. ThunderCats is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold). Michael Jelenic (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman) and Ethan Spaulding (Avatar: The Last Airbender) are the producers. Large image Spoiler

Usually for stuff like this you think the original was really awesome then if you ever make an effort to go back and actually watch it you realize its really crap and your mind just made it to be so much cooler than it ever really was throughout the years.
I'm going to disagree a little bit, because. Most original versions of alot of cartoons are often better than the remakes or updated versions. The Care Bears was nauseating in the 80s, but the old cartoon isn't as mind numbing and dumb-down as the new CGI version on Saturday mornings. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero actually had alot of humor and satire in it, especially compared to newer versions, such as, Sigma Six, Extreme, Resolute and Renegade. Also, even for a so-called stupid kids cartoon from 1980s; the plots, the dialogue and character development are still ages ahead of the modern version. In the original G.I. Joe miniseries, they were actually using real guns (with bullets). I have to also say that the character design is not the worst among the original cartoon and its remakes. For some reason, alot of cartoons in the present day are not as action packed and are not as well developed. X-Men (Fox Series) was probably 10x more intriguing to watch than Wolverine and the X-Men and the X-Men Evolution. Garfield is the same way, modern version is dumb-down, 80s-90s version keeps most of the jokes and comedy from the comics. In fact nowadays, those same cartoons would probably be pushed more towards adults and little more adult content would be added.
why do they have to make the thundercats look androgynous in the face? Its the bieberization of vintage tv and i wont stand for it. But i will limit my revolt to sitting on my a.ss.
People mistake better animation for better cartoons. The plots etc were better Now. . the animation is smoother and better drawn Mainly because of technology which allows for higher level art with less time and expense. Rocket River
Androgynous? Cheetara looks feminine and hot to me, man. What is androgynous about her? Don't sit on your butt. Do something about what bothers you.
The character design isn't what I was expecting; I thought the same thing of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but that show turned out to be great. If this reboot is as clever and witty as the new Batman series, which is equal parts humor, action and drama, this should be great. Panthro is still a muthaf**king BEAST! Anyone remember when he picked up the Thunder-Tank, WITH HIS BARE HANDS!? Beastly... The guy who plays Bill Cosby's Grand father on the 'Cosby Show' needs to voice him again; best voice work ever. Hope they don't change the intro song; one of the best intros in cartoon history. I wouldn't mind a remix version.
Oh, and from the looks of that picture Panthro looks like a hulking Monster, they better not make him act as such. Panthro is a f**king genius... Is it silly I used to look up to him as a black role model when I was very young? Saturday morning late 80's early 90's (from what I can remember) FTW.
