I suggest you start looking into independent and foreign movies as well.

The one thing that just makes me go  for this list is going down to #10.

The Dark Knight is a good movie but comeon? #10?

I guess for me it's not better than a lot of those movies listed behind it.

This is a great movie and everyone should check it out. It used to be #1 on IMDB's list a few years back.

The extended version is the one that I saw and it explained a lot more. One of the best foreign movie with a fantastic soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. I can't believe Last of the Mohicans, Contact, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Jurassic Park and a few other great movies aren't on this list.

Good grief. So, you're not even going to consider "Lawrence of Arabia" because it was made before 1970? Wow, this is just sad.

IMDB is for a younger crowd. I for one have tried to watch Citizen Kane twice and fell asleep both times.

Of the movies in this thread, I like Silence of the Lambs and City of God the best.

Citizen Kane and the Graduate are overrated in my opinion. Maybe great compared to what else was out when they came out, but it's been a while.

hell, i think #10 is too low.

obviously everyone will have quibbles here and there, especially on the Top 250 where you can actually see rankings, but imdb's ratings seem to be the best that are out there. while the voting obviously skews to younger people (it does require computer access after all), over 1000's of votes you weed out the haters and the fanboys and get a pretty fair view of how a movie has achieved its goals. the top 250 is pretty much a who's who of movies and outside of the order seems pretty hard to argue with.**

**except Ratatouille, just because it says pixar people doesn't mean you have to think it's great.

oh, and for the OP, i'm generally not a huge fan of older black and white movies but Casablanca is great. it doesn't really feel like an old movie to me for some reason.

citizen kane at #37 invalidates this entire list.
the shining at #49 - are you f***ing kidding me?
    apocalypse now at #36

those 3 are in my top 10 all-time any day of the week...

but also these shouldnt be ranked so low.
    scarface at #156
    princess bride at #189
    exorcist at #206
    patton at #230

and there is no excuse for trading places not even making the list!

12 year old jo mama getting a peep at JLC's rockin' t*tties says "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

The top 250 used to be a pretty good measure and fair list but of late way too many fans stuffing the ballot so to say and too many people liking the flavor of the month type movies

i mean Grave of the Fireflies is at 130

with animated films (just sticking to those) as

    toy story 3
    wall-e
    spirited away
    mononoke

above it...while all four of those a good films in their own right I have yet to see an animated film like GOTF move me.

its not the worst list, it certainly can be better but being top 250 doesnt hold the same weight as it once did for me anymore
