No one has spoken about this, but is the fact that this is Adelman's last season with NO contract extension affecting the players?

The problem has been defense, and defense is about effort. Why put in effort for a coach that will be gone at season's end?

Maybe Adelman is subconsciouly projecting that he is going to leave? Why would he stay with a team with little short term prospects of contending, he could easily get a job with a contender next year.

Yep, another issue...Adelman is not locked up, and the players know this as well.

Maybe he wants to see what direction the organization is going to take before he decides to stay?

I don't see him sticking around if we are rebuilding....do you?

Also, if the Rox decide to go young, do you think Adelman is the guy that will be happy about that?

If they're playing for the coach only, then they dont belong in the NBA, but I seriously doubt that's the case. There's a lot more to defense than effort. Just ask Chuck after he defended Randolph on that shot towards the end of the memphis game.

If anything, it's more likely RA is the one who's on auto-pilot.

when jvg coached out the last year of his contract, it was not seen as a negative. i think this is just another excuse we are conjuring up. hogwash.

I'd be surprised if Adelman returns unless major changes are made to the roster. This team as currently constructed isn't very good, lacks vital pieces (superstar, closer, center, two-way players, etc) and doesn't have a bright future.

Adelman isnt Morey's biggest fan. I said it 3 yrs ago and I'm saying it now. It might just be a mutual thing at the end of the year or one of the playoff teams might see themselves a Rick Adelman away from winning a title. Now, I don't know how that could be true, but i guess it can be packaged and sold that way.

Before the rockets hired jvg, I was a big backer of Silas. I think he has a balance to his coaching approach. Those Hornet teams were over acheivers and very balanced despite untimely deaths and injuries. I always thought the Cavs made a mistake firing Silas. Now that he's with the bobcats, they're playing alot better, DJ doesnt look like a bust and all in all they're coming together. If adelman leaves, I would get Silas.

Adelman would be an upgrade for the Knicks over D'Antoni. I could also see Adelman replacing Vinny Del Negro for the Clippers. Adelman could have the Clippers in the playoffs, next year.

Adelman is a hall of fame coach and has had a wonderful career, but he is not the long term solution if this team wants to win a title in the future. It's in the best interest of Adelman and the Rockets to allow Adelman to move on to either retirement or to a contending team.

My guess is that Adelman would rather retire than to start over in another city, but that's just my hunch. Winning or not, he has it made here in Houston. If he wants to coach here another year or two then great, but it's delaying the inevitable that he is not the solution long term.

However my fear is that if you lose Adelman, you lose his coaching staff, who would be real tough to replace overnight.

If he doesn't want to stick around he'll have to take some extended time off. Regardless of where our roster is at, there isn't a better situation available right now for him.

Good points. I personally have had enough of Rick the Ruler, his player coach style leads to defensive apathy and horrible execution of the players and his horrible in-game coaching skillz have lost us several games already, obviously Rick should be coaching veteran, championship calibre teams like the Celtics or the Magic instead of the Rockets. Its a good thing he's a lame duck, both parties should walk away after this season.

As for the coaching staff, I doubt they will pack their bags when Adelman does, didn't coach T apply for the T-wolves head coaching gig last summer? I'm sure he's more than ready to take the reigns. The only reason they'll go away is if we get a new coach who has 100% the opposite style, like JVG.

There will most definitely be a job available for him next season.

    Signed,
    Phil Jackson

P.s Reason Adelman came is because it was "the right situation for him" (Yao and Tracy)

What makes you think that? We had one of the best defenses in the league when we had Ron Artest and Yao Ming. Now that we lost them, we're pretty crappy on defense. Adelman wasn't doing anything different -- that team was just made up of good defenders.

When you look around at the league's best defenses, you usually find a big shotblocking presence and good rebounders. We don't have either. If you're looking to blame someone for this team's struggles: blame Morey, not Adelman.

Adelman has been fired from every coaching gig he's had. If he doesn't return to the Rockets, I think it will be because the Rockets don't want him -- I can't see him abandoning this team if they want him back (and I most certainly do).

If Adelman is leaving this off-season, than I want to trade Martin and Miller(system guys) at this trade deadline. Might as well before their production comes down in a different system, and they lose trade value..

He could have had a job the year he sat out, but quickly took the opportunity to coach the Rockets because he had two stars to work with.

Unless a major shake-up is in the works, I don't see him wanting to coach here next season when a job in L.A (for example).. Which is closer to home, could potentially be his.

He'll get a chance to sit down again during the games.

Ya i don't see RA staying with us if we're not anywhere near contention. He's getting old and I don't see him sticking around a team that very much could be in rebuild mode soon. However, if Morey can pull off the unlikely and get us a superstar, then I can see RA staying and step up his coaching a little bit.

I don't know about a "lame duck" but Adelman has always impressed me as being an "odd duck." No doubt is more knowledgeable about basketball than me or likely any one else on this board, BUT his rotations and substitution patterns have been questioned everywhere he has coached. His "coming out of a timeout, last play to win or tie the game" plays have to be the worst in the league, consistently. Sometimes they make no sense, "one second remaining, need a three to tie, the play is for a lay up." Huh?!

I wish this was his last year, because he just doesn't seem to know what to do with this group of players. Maybe nobody would. We might have more one dimensional role players than any team in the league. Nevertheless, the Rockets can't continue just going nowhere, year and year.

These are the same complaints that whiny, unknowledgeable fans have about every coach.

Almost any situation would be better for him.
