Anybody ever been to a Secrets resort? My travel agent can get me a good deal on a week long vacation. Says it's 2,000 off per person.

My wife and I (married in October) have been casually looking for a honeymoon-type trip because when we got married, I had just started a new job and couldn't take a vacation. Seems like this would be an excellent vacation. We could get the deal on any one of the three Riviera Maya area resorts.

    Questions:

Have you ever been to a Secrets?

    Was it awesome?

Is Mexico safe around Cancun, Riveria Maya areas (I don't know much about these areas)?

    Any tips or suggestions?

We went to Secrets Maroma last October for our late honeymoon and it was awesome.

Everything was top notch (food, drinks and etc). Only one con is that it is far away from action and isolated. You will need a cab if you want to go into town. By third day, i was restless when there was nothing to do at night. They do have a lounge though.

It is very safe at the resort. It is secluded away from the main road. You have to go to the entrance and sign int hen drive a bit to get to the resort.

    The beach is very beautiful!!

If you want a resort that is close to action then I recommend The Royal Playa Del Carmen. It is about the same $$. It is right smack in the action. With this resort, you can leave whenever you want to without calling for a cab. You can walk around in the town(5th ave) to go to bars/clubbing. We got married at this resort last May. Very beautiful resort. It is safe in that area. Just use your common sense.

We are going back there this May.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Did you mean to say $2000 per person or the prices are off by $2000?

She says the prices are $2,000 less than normal per person.

i was in playa mujeres last week, which is about 30 min from cancun airport and 15 minutes from cancun.

safety was never a concern for us.

Thanks for the advice. Maroma Beach, Capri, and Silver Sands would be the three we could get the deal at. So far, I think Maroma Beach looks the best. I haven't talked to my wife about it yet, and I think she'll be hesitant to go, because she'll fear safety. Maroma, being secluded, might be the best bet. I would love to venture into town, but I don't know if she would. That would probably have to be something we'd do on our second trip.

We have a price for four days, and we have a price for a week. The price for a week is only about 700 dollars more, so I'm thinking the week would be worth it?

I see. Just curious, do you have a travel agent for work or is this a personal travel agent? I'm assuming they are the only ones that can get these kinds of deals at places like this.

I'm not going anytime soon, but will be getting married May/June 2012 and it's never to early to look for deals on a honeymoon. I've never thought about using a travel agent though.

Really, you guys shouldn't even worry about safety. They are very good taking care of tourists because if something happens to a tourist then it will be a BIG hit on their economy. Like I said, use your common sense.

We always felt safe even walking around on 5th ave. There are so many people walking around.

It is going to be our third time back within a year.

DieHardRocket, def use a travel agent. We used one for our wedding.

It's a friend of a friend that I work with. I never thought to use a travel agent until now.

Thing is, when you book yourself, you still pay a travel agent fee. It just goes to the website you book on, instead of to a travel agent. If you have a travel agent, though, and you get in a jam, wherever you are, they can use their resources to get you out of it. Also, they'll be knowledgeable about things like trip insurance, etc.

I think you can still get better deals through an agent, also.

Just came back from that area a couple weeks ago. Great fun. Absolutely safe. Didn't witness even one murder.

If you want to go to a resort (assumedly with a bunch of other gringos or tourists) then I am sure this is a good option... But I will tell you about a place I went last year that is close to that area and really great.

Puerto Morelos is 40 or 50 miles from Cancun past Playa Del Carmen. It is a quaint little fishing village. There are no resorts in Puerto Morelos (I think they are banned) so all the hotels are little places or rent a condo for pretty cheap as well. Anyway, there are other tourists, but not many and you can easily get a snorkeling/scuba/fishing tour for very little. We got a guy to take us fishing for 4 hours, for myself and 2 other people and it was $150. They have a jungle market on Sundays and you can go get some great food there and see a lot of cultural stuff. Beaches are immaculate and clean and the water is great. This guy walks the beach selling baked good that were great. Great bars in the area as well, all the restaurants are cooking fresh fish and if you go fishing, they will cook your catch for you along with rice and everything on the side for extremely cheap. A great town to go and relax, great little food places all around.

I wanted to go back to Puerto Morelos this year, but we are heading to Placencia, Belize in 12 days. Enjoy your trip wherever you go, nothing is better than being a beach bum for a few days.

Last time we went to Playa Del Carmen was when my wife was 10wks pregnant - we were there for 4 days when we found out a hurricane was heading straight towards us (thankfully some other guests had told us..as the resort hadn't said a word at that point). We didn't have laptops or anything..just our cell-phones. We were stuck, but my Dad in Florida spent several hours on the phone and ended up purchasing the last 2 tickets on the last plane out of Cancun before the airport shut down. The Hurricane came in the next night. When we got back, we called the travel agent and with some work, they were able to get a refund on the tickets we didn't use. Without the travel agent, we would've been stuck with the bill.

I'm not familiar with Secrets Resorts, but when I saw the name, I figured it was some kind of wife-swapping resort.
