[Vipers] Antonio Anderson traded for Matt Janning

MCALLEN, TEXAS – The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced Thursday that they have acquired shooting guard Matt Janning (6-4, 198, Northeastern) from the Maine Red Claws for guard Antonio Anderson (6-6, 215, Memphis).

Janning is averaging 9.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 27.4 minutes in 20 games (eight starts). He is shooting 43% from the field, including 46.4% from behind the arc. Over his last three games, Janning averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.7 steals while hitting 17-of-33 shots (51.5%) and 9-of-12 (75%) from behind the arc. He scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while hitting all three of his attempts from behind the arc to go with two rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block against the Vipers at State Farm Arena on Tuesday.

“We think he fits our system well. Matt is a rookie player with a lot of upside. It will be good to get a chance to get know him up close and personal,” Vipers head coach Chris Finch said.

Janning made the Phoenix Suns out of NBA Training Camp, but did not see any action before getting waived on November 10th. Janning averaged 5.6 points in seven pre-season games, shooting 38.1% from the field. During the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Janning averaged 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds in five games and starts for the Suns. He also played in two games for the Boston Celtics during 2010 NBA Summer League in Orlando, averaging 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds.

Anderson is averaging 7.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 17 games (12 starts). Last year he averaged 16.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 40 games and starts.

“Antonio has been a large part of our success since we’ve been here. This season he and we felt that a change of environment would do him good. We wish him the best. He’s a high level player. He’s close to his dream and he’s headed to a team that really wanted him, so we’re happy about that,” Finch said.

Despite not even being invited to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in this year's pre-draft process, Matt Janning surprised many people by making Phoenix Suns' opening camp roster, while he's now having a solid year in the D-League.

An extremely team-oriented, unselfish, off-the-ball type player, Matt Janning doesn't really fit the mold of your typical D-League guard, and that shows in his rather pedestrian scoring production. There are many times where Janning can go unnoticed in the team's offense, though he's constantly moving off the ball, maintaining good spacing, and making the extra pass when the ball comes his way.

Looking at his offensive skill set, Janning is an excellent spot shooter off the ball with a high and quick release, knocking down 43% of his threes thus far, having the rare distinction of having a higher three-point than two-point shooting percentage. He can also hit pull-up jumpers and has a good shot fake, but does so more out of catch-and-shoot plays as opposed to in isolation, not really having the ball-handling skills to shake his man consistently when matched straight up.

In terms of attacking the basket, Janning has a decent first step with the ball and has some crafty moves in his arsenal, but his advanced ball-handling is limited and he isn't the best shot creator.

As a passer, Janning shows great vision and is capable of making tough passes to cutters or occasionally operating out of the pick-and-roll, but most of his assists come as flow-of-the-offense passes, and he's not one to break a defense down off the dribble to find teammates. While Janning is a good passer for a two, he looks uncomfortable when forced to play the point, and even can get into trouble bringing the ball up the floor against tough pressure defense.

Defensively, Janning is an excellent communicator with great fundamentals while he has solid lateral quickness and has no problem playing tough perimeter defense. Not having the thickest build, Janning is however wiry strong with solid length, and more than holds his own in isolation situations.

Looking forward, Janning has a decent skill set while being an excellent team player with a very high basketball IQ, though it's clear his game is not particularly well suited for the D-League style of play. It's clear in watching him play he could be more valuable in a different setting, and because of such it wouldn't be surprising if he got called up for a test run at some point, though he could also have a very successful career overseas if he decides to go that route.

LOL :grin: I was thinking the exact same thing after watching the video. Why trade a guy who is probably an all around better d-leaguer for a guy who has a better NBA skillset if you are not going to sign him. ANd God knows there is no room at the Inn on this NBA roster. The last thing this current roster needs is Matt Janning. We just dumped Jermaine Taylor for nothing. If Matt Janning continues to play at his level he will surely get called up by someone and we will lose, UNLESS.... Unless there is a trade already in the works that involves losing some wings and clearing a roster spot.

I don't know what that could be but man doesn't Jannings game look a lot like Martins. Of course he is years away from refining it enough and that will still not make him what Martin is now but still it is eerily close in style. So what is Morey got up his sleeve. That Martin Scola for Murphy Favors deal is looking more and more likely.

I wouldn't read too much into D-Leauge trades.

I for one think this trade was simply made, because they like Janning as a prospect and Anderson wasn't getting much playing time lately, which might have caused him to be a locker room distraction.

Janning also is three years younger (22) than Anderson (25), so that might have been a factor as well. Who knows
