Just saw a guitarists friend of mine play solo this weekend (with only vocal accompaniment). First time I saw him play solo...acoustic.

Didn't realize how he was getting all those rhythms out ... no computer, but I couldn't see his feet. Afterwards, he showed me his Boomerang looping device. I had no idea these things existed.

Awesome. So, apparently, you guitarists really don't need a bassist, or rhythm guitar accompaniment. By coincidence, I saw Keller Williams play Sunday with the Gibson Echoplex

For people like me who don't know what a guitarists can do with a foot pedal, looping device ... check this out. At the start of a song, he plays his rhythm (or a second/third guitar riff) into a foot pedal device then loops them.

There are no other musicians playing in this video.

Or you could just be really good at playing guitar. Then you don't need no fancy highfalutin technology flimflam.

    <embed id=VideoPlayback src=http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=7942029277711475397&hl=en&fs=true style=width:400px;height:326px allowFullScreen=true allowScriptAccess=always type=application/x-shockwave-flash> </embed>

John Lennon used to use "Scruggs picking" in which he would play a back-and-forth bass melody with his thumb on the lowest strings, while picking an arpeggio with his other fingers. I spent several weeks learning to play this when I was younger:

I could post a bunch of vids, but just get a few DL4's or some Moogerfooger modulaters and some verbage.

don't waste your money on RC-20XL's(boss RC-2 series) or Jamman loopers. Those are a waste of tone sucking crap pedals.

If you really want to "loop" in a non-live performance, just grab a M-Audio interface and Abelton Live or some Presonus gear. Then after you loop to death you can become a deathstar..

just wanted to point out one more artist that loops(and layers) his stuff to death...including his bass tracks...

    Not a fan.

I would rather listen to a whole band that has separate elements of music, and has to rely on their individual talents to compose a song.

While all the videos and talk seems to center on performances, these loop stations, yes, even the Boss RC-2, are indispensible tools for artists practicing at home, writing tunes, etc. They made my life much easier...and productive I might add.

When I was younger I used some looping technology, used to use a digital delay pedal with a 2 second delay. As I've gotten older I like the sound and energy of a full band rather than layering on loops. When I play some of my solo guitar stuff I rely on playing open strings to create a bass line rather than looping.

yeah, my friend who I mention is in several bands. When I saw him looping, he was playing a gig in an expansive lobby of luxury hotel. His job was to make everyone hang in the lobby by the fire and buy drinks/appetizers. There wasn't really a stage for a band, just a piano area, and I suppose solo-ing means he gets all the money.

    Perfect setting for looping.

Howie Day before he got signed (and tried to rape chicks on his bus) and was still enjoyable did solo shows and was a heavy user of pedals and loop effects. I liked it, but one very random night a band (Cordero, out of Brooklyn) stayed with us, watched a video I had of him performing and bashed him mercilessly for the use of the pedal effects and loops.

Of course, that band was pretty impressive musically - intricate songwriting where each instrument completed the chords of the others. No guitar strumming, in other words.

(Looping and "fake bass" at the 5 min mark)

One of the better examples of Howie Day's solo era and his looping
    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/p6OOUH6UmeE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/p6OOUH6UmeE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

When I saw him a couple years later, full band, it blew. It took the magic out of his performances and white washed them into generic rock.

He's a prime example of getting big being the worst thing that could have happened to him.

i had one for a couple years and just sold it last month - i also have the green line 6 looper and i like it better.

juana molina uses two boss loop stations - she is amazing - voices, guitars, keys and beats all looped by one person. despite it all being loop-based, her stuff never comes off as repetitive to me. if you like tropicallia at all you will like her stuff.

even weirder is that in the 90's this chick had the biggest sitcom in south america - she was basically the jerry seinfeld of argentina and gave it up to make music.

Any musician that can be replaced by a loop or computer program, even for 8 bars at a time, is not worth his salt.

That's fine and dandy as long as you have a repetitive bass line, but what if you're NOT a mannequin?!?!
