Never really thought about this. Let it Be and Hard Days Night by the Beatles both come to mind. Also, London Calling by the Clash. The Bends by Radiohead (was never big on the song Kid A). And Yoshimi Pt 1 by the flaming lips
that 2nd half of joshua tree is the best thing they ever did and red hill mining town is one of U2's greatest songs. achtung baby is better than rattle and hum, ill give you that. but its not better than unforgettable fire (wire is the best U2 song ever), war or joshua tree...no way. those are 3 perfect albums. for me, U2, along with the cure, rem and new order all broke up by 1990. nothing they did beyond that date counts.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath 1970 - Black Sabbath 6:16 Bad Company - Bad Company 1974 - Bad Company 4:50 Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden 1980 - Iron Maiden 3:35 Going for the trifectas...
Too many to list, but off the top of my head: The Police - Reggatta de Blanc (ee-ooooooo, ee-oooooo, ee-yaaaa-yooooooo!) The Police - Syncronicity (I and II) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Freaky Styley Rush - Fly By Night AC/DC - Highway to Hell U2 - The Unforgettable Fire Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
I think you should give it a another chance. Those lyrics are mostly actual advertising slogans. The German phrase at the beginning was an Audi slogan. Bono and Edge had been reading cyberpunk scifi like Nueromancer and were inspired by it. Zooropa is supposed to be this European city of the future that is covered in lights and advertising, like in Blade Runner, but before it gets rundown and hellish. Zooropa, Stay, The First Time, Dirty Day...those are 4 really good songs that could have easily fit on Achtung Baby. Dirty Day is a song they need to dust off and play live again: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mzmcDO1adR8?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mzmcDO1adR8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Doesn't count? Not to these people (each one is from a different reviewer): This album changed my life. It made me pick up a guitar and try and write my own music. It taught me lessons about faith and hope in the face of heartache. All that may sound pretentious, but no other album that came out in my lifetime has ever affected me in the way this one has. Most of my other favorites belong to other times and generations, but this one is mine. I really think this is U2's masterpiece. In a word: staggering. I don't know if I've ever heard an album which can even come close to capturing the kaleidoscope of sheer emotion that floods from these twelve songs. Just as Alice in Chains dragged us to the pitch black depths of heroin-addiction with "Dirt", U2 does the same, only with lost love and heartbreak as the backdrop. This is the best of all U2 Albums. Every song hits the highs and the lows in tune and life. U2 hit their absolute peak with Achtung Baby, and I really can't come up with a better overall album from start to finish. I could go on and on. In short, Achtung Baby is everything you could ever want in an album. For this music junkie, I can say that this is probably the lone album that has never EVER fallen out of the rotation after nearly 20 years. Achtung Baby is one of U2's most consistently good albums. It stands the test of time as truly incredible music from one of the most talented bands ever. This album is one of the top notch albums by U2 ever. Awesome singing by Bono, guitar work and terrific music. A must buy for anyone who loves music and U2 in particular. Simply put, one of their greatest albums, which makes it one of the greatest rock albums of all time. I'm 26 now, about to graduate from Dental School have listened to just about every music genre, and with all the burned cds in my vehicle presently, there is one actual purchased CD- achtung baby. I still love it, I still listen to it, no album has stood that test of time. I would say the most successful album for U2 from musicianship and lyrical perspective. Not a single track which is a filler. This is the pinnacle of U2's library. Musically and lyrically complex and moving, much more powerful and complete than The Joshua Tree. Surprisingly relevant, and incredibly durable, Achtung Baby might be the only album you'll ever need. Why? It's got the soul, it's got the depth and it's got the heart to keep you company through almost any season of life. This is my favorite U2 album. This is a wildly creative, ambitious album. It's not the work of idle artists, but vibrant ones. every song stands out for me, with no favorites as i love them all. this is U2's best album, hands down, no other album even comes close. I consider this to be my favorite album of all time and despite it being 17 years old it still sounds as cutting edge and fresh as the day it was released Produced at the peak of U2's intellectual, musical, emotional and technical maturity and creativity. A dark, intense, sensual masterpiece. This was the day that I loved music. From that day forward, I would listen and obsess over all genres. This is the beginning of my musical journey. This is my white album... I am not the biggest U2 fan in the world. Indeed I do find them mostly talked up beyond their true quality as a band. Having said that, this is a genuinely great CD. It is still my favorite album. If you doubt buying this album, don't. It's one of those albums where EVERY song is catchy, meaningful, beautiful yet experimental and overall AWESOME!!! This is my #1 favorite album of all time. No kidding, this is THE best U2 album and not only that, easily in the Top-10 greatest albums of ALL TIME. This album is flawless. I still break it out every now and then and can't believe how good it is. This album will always be special to me in so many ways. I listened to it daily for over a year during one of the greatest years of my life. Achtung Baby however does belong with The Unforgettable Fire as U2's greatest albums. I only wish U2 had put out more records between these two. I estimate that I must have listened to this a least 2000 times. Ok, this is going to be the most dramatic, emotional, different, and cheesiest review you'll ever see me write; but I mean every last word. Achtng Baby: where U2 was at their finest, where they showed the world that they could do the unbelievable, where they showed that a bands' finest work is often their most underrated masterpiece
