Okay...my wife and I have seen the previews for this movie for some time now...going on a month or so...the first previews were just outright freaky...you didn't know what they were for...just black and white images with a sort of white noise in the background...super freaky...i've learned a little bit more about it...checked out the website which is just weird...Refman tells me it's based somewhat on a video game...anyone know anything else? my wife digs creepy movies and drags me to see them...

See the original my friend. The remake is decent fun, but the original is a classic.

Yeah, I heard something about it. Something about people dying after they view this videotape, and the lead character is investigating these deaths to try and figure out why these people are dying. It kinds of sounds like a David Lynch movie. And it just so happens that Naomi Watts, who was superb in Lynch's Mulholland Drive, also plays the lead character in this movie.

Yeah, I didn't even know. I see it's a remake of a recent foreign film. Hopefully it's not as bad as Vanilla Sky. :D

Here's a review I found. It was on IMDB, so it's possible the reviewer works at DreamWorks.

The Ring is a a real gem...a piece of modern cinema that is superbly acted, beautifully filmed, nicely paced, and well-written. It succeeds both as a horror film and a character study. There's haunting imagery and plenty of scares to rob you of a good night's sleep...and at the same time there's a strong female lead with wonderful supporting characters.

The opening of the film really sets things into motion and young actresses Amber Tamblyn and Rachael Bella infuse a lot into their small but important roles. There's plenty of horror and shock to be found in those first ten minutes. As for the rest of the film, it builds nicely to a shocking climax that had the entire theater holding their breath.

Naomi Watts shows that she has amazing star power and is headed to the top of the Hollywood food chain. Martin Henderson has a lot of charisma and fills out Noah, making him genuine and sympathetic to the audience. Finally, special props go to David Dorfman who is easily one of the most promising child actors to grace the screen.

The film's cinematography is also way above average and Washington state is captured in all of its' bleak and rainy glory.

Overall, I'd recommend the film. It's superior to the movie it's based on and it's a real joy to see Hollywood cinema that's this good.

"Ringu", the original film, from Japan, is really scary, from what I hear. My Japanese friend told me it scared the s**t out of audiences there. Hopefully this remake sticks closely enough to the original that we, too, will be scared.

Anyone ever see a so-so comedy in the late 80's with Dudley Moore as an ad exec wrongfully sent to an asylum because he wanted to be honest in advertising? He was fired in the first place because he came up with an ad that he never thought would make it into the NY Times (it was meant as a joke), but it was accidentally sent to the paper, which printed the full one-page ad of a film called "The Freak" (not to be confused with our own beloved poster). The caption read: A film so frightening it will f*** you up for life.

Sorry about the big buildup for nothing, but I'd like to see a scary film like that. "Red Dragon" is good but I've read the book, I saw "Manhunter," and the plot hews too closely to "Silence of the Lambs" anyway. So I hope "Ring" packs a good scary punch.

I believe you're thinking of Crazy People with Daryl Hannah and Paul Reiser. Great movie. That scene with all those mentally challenged people driving cars around is classic...

I'll just say that those early silent previews weirded me out sufficiently...a little girl falling off a cliff...eerie black and white imagery...just creepy stuff.

damn it, i know my wife is gonna end up dragging me to see this!!!

Since this thread has veered off topic, I guess I'll tell a story about the night I saw Mulholland Drive. The night I saw the film there were two old ladies in front of me. Now, it was obvious that these ladies did not sign up for this particular type of film. To be sure, the fact that the film had a "artsy" image must have been the reason they came to see it. I imagine they wanted to see something along the lines of Sense & Sensibility. What they got was Naomi Watts masturbating. Not to mention the whole lesbo scenes. Well, as you can imagine, they had the look of horror in their faces walking out of the film. They were like  !?!? I just about busted out laughing; it took a lot for me to hold it back as I was right behind them.

i saw wild things in the theater with my wife...there was an older couple in front of us who, like us, didn't know the girl on girl scenes were part of the movie...the look on their faces was priceless...i was a little surprised...they had no idea what to do...my wife and i were trying not to laugh out loud.

Yeah, I remember there were three old ladies in the audience for Forty Days and Forty Nights...they left about 15 minutes into the movie. Then, for Rules of Attraction there was an elderly couple there and a couple with a five year-old kid. That really pisses me off when parents do that! They both left early in the movie. Don't these people actually get an idea what the movie is about before they go see it? Or do they just randomly pick something.

and by the way, Rules of Attraction sucked! One of the worst of the year.

I'll never catch your post count. I'll eventually get a job and then I won't be able to keep up with your "I can post at work" pace. :D

Does she know you feel that way? Maybe we should tell her. :)
