For the last week or so, I have had the most overwhelming urge to paint. Now understand, I have never painted, never thought of painting and never really given a **** about art. Has this ever happened to any of you? Did you just ignore it? Did you buy some sort of "artist startup kit"? What the hell is wrong with me? Artists, how much would it take to buy some paints, brushes, canvases and **** like that?

Faulkner said something along the lines of "I don't write because I want to, I write because I have to."

It doesn't matter what it cost, just go do it, though it might not hurt to pick up an art history or composition book if you have no previous knowledge.

Feed the Muse and you'll feel better.

Don't buy a startup kit - it will all be inferior materials. In what medium do you want to paint? That will greatly dictate cost.

I'll give you a few tubes of oil or acrylic paints and a brush or two (since we are in the same city) if you just want to get an idea of whether you will enjoy it.

I can also make you some high quality canvases...but that would cost you (but it would still be cheaper than store-bought...and much better quality. :)

Email me if you want...about this or any other kind of advice/help.

I recommend acrylic paints or watercolors. Both dry relatively quickly, unlike oils, which can take weeks. Both are fairly affordable, and also removable. Oils need turps to come off.

    Have fun!

Funny, I consider watercolors to be the most expensive. You really get what you pay for in watercolor - paints, brushes, paper, etc. It is also the hardest medium.

I've always wanted to get into watercolors but have never found enough time.

Remember the first rule of painting. There's no such thing as a mistake, just happy little accidents!

Sadly, he did. My mother took a class with him and said he was just as nice in person as he appeared on television.

Bob Ross died on July 4, 1995. The Joy of Painting was one of my favorite shows on PBS when I was a kid.

Every time I watched it, I thought "Didn't he paint this YESTERDAY?", but then I realized all his paintings were unique in their own way...

All hail Commander Mark and his Draw Squad.

As Barbie would say, painting is hard.

    rimbaud,

Assuming (from your posts in this thread) that you paint, is there any chance at all that we could convince you to post a digital image of one of your paintings?
