Yes, that is illegal. If he is backing down a player dribbling, then picks it up and puts it down with 2 hands for his last dribble, that is a double dribble. If you catch the ball in the post, unless you are on the move, you have to put the ball down to take steps, which is why the power dribble is used. So post players can move closer to the basket.

If he's using his dribble to back down Player B and then attempts a "power dribble" with both hands, then it is illegal and is called as such.

If he's backing him down with the ball without using his dribble, its a travel.

If he's backing him down without the ball, its irrelevant, and the "power dribble" is legal (see video posted by Kam).

Technically you can start a dribble with a power dribble then?

No, you can't continue to dribble. You either go up for the shot or pass the ball out of the paint. It's done as a start of an offensive move to the basket.

I should have been more clear....i meant simply coming down with both hands, not necessarily doing a power dribble to the rim. It sounds illegal, but i guess i'm asking because I don't remember the rules specifying you can't use two hands to start the dribble. Usually they just say you can't start dribbling, then touch the ball with both hands and proceed to dribble again.

Anyone have the link to the official rules? NBA.com's isn't very extensive.

How thick are you people, the the double dribble rule is as simple as it gets.

You can start a dribble however you want, but if two hands touch the ball after dribbling you can't continue to dribble.

    Yao's Fist technical

Shaq uses it twice early on

    Shaq Collection

You can find big men using power dribbles everywhere, it's a fundamental play and probably happens 10 times a game.

But once you've started dribbling you can't decide to finish with a power dribble, that is illiegal.

The Power Dribble isn't debatable but the pivot to 'Lisa Leslie step through' @ 1:28 always threw me for a loop; I have no idea if that's a travel. I know it isn't a travel in the WNBA because Lisa Leslie is going to the Hall of Fame with that move. When I'm playing pickup ball we just call it a travel, but I swear Carlos Boozer does it in the NBA all the time.

That's legal, you only take one step.

The must stay on pivot foot rule only applies if you've already dribbled and come to a stop. If you haven't dribbled yet, that pivot and step through is legal.

Sometimes people pick up their pivot foot and rather than stepping through they shuffle the feet laterally?

You most certainly can start a dribble by throwing it down with two hands, if you want to keep dribbling you have to catch with one hand. Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me, but it is legal.

The power dribble is extremely effective down low, i myself have used it, but you only get the one pound to the floor.

^ I don't see what that has to do with the topic at hand, dear sir. :(

I always knew the DREAM SHAKE would end with a power dribble and either fade or regular shot. A two-handed dribble was in DREAM's arsenal of moves.

amaru, did YOU call it, or did another person call it?

Yup. That's a travel. Technically at least...
You can't move your pivot foot twice. You can only move your pivot foot if both feet are airborne at the same time.
