anything coming out from Oscilloscope Laboratories is solid the Garden Burma VJ Gunnin For That #1 Spot F.L.O.W.
I don't trust documentaries. They carry a weight of authority with an audience like a history book would, but in a format that is more evocative than rational, and less accessible for fact-checking. It's also out of the loop of a robust peer-review. I feel like they're trying to trick me, and some of what they will tell me will stick in my head despite my apprehensions. I'd rather just read a book for that stuff and watch movies with girls shaking their butts.
I can't remember the name of it, and I think it's something generic, but the 9/11 documentary that was filmed by the French(I think) brothers that were documenting the life of a New York fireman. While filming at ladder 1 on 9/11/01, the film went from being a firefighter documentary into being what I think is some of the most captivating and riveting footage of any piece of world history out there. It's awful in a way meaning that I was watching it with my jaw on the floor.
I thought of a few more that really grabbed me: A haunting scene from Titicut Follies of an asylum patient singing along with the television: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/26CjZBGYoKI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/26CjZBGYoKI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> "The only American film banned from release for reasons other than obscenity or national security, 'Titicut Follies' was filmed inside the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Bridgewater, a prison hospital for the criminally insane." (I'd suggest watching any Frederick Wiseman documentaries you can get your hands on - he's really a master of the form - but his films, particularly this one, can be a bit difficult to find). Manda Bala (Send a Bullet) <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rbff7PBDUP8?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rbff7PBDUP8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> "An examination of corruption and class warfare in Brazil as told through the stories of a wealthy businessman, a plastic surgeon who assists kidnapping victims and a politician whose income relies on a frog farm." I believe it's all available on youtube. A great recent one: Anvil! Enjoyed the following 2 docs about politics: Street Fight <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/R8jtAASYdLw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/R8jtAASYdLw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k6x_I6Bm8gE?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k6x_I6Bm8gE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
This documentary is still in the works but I am really looking forward to it. <iframe frameborder="0" height="410px" src="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/6688684/hidden-colors-a-full-lenth-feature-documentary/widget/video.html" width="480px"></iframe>

Saw this a year or two ago... down right chilling, and very frustrating to watch the legal process unfold. Recommended.
The Freshest Kids. Documentary on the roots of B-Boys/Breaking. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uizp9UYdKKw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uizp9UYdKKw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> For another documentary on B-Boys, I recommend "Planet B-Boy"
Dear Zachary is one of the most emotionally powerful things I've ever seen. It floored me; one of the only movies to ever make me feel a full range of emotions, from joy to absolute helplessness. I'm surprised "Harlan County USA" hasn't been mentioned. It's very old, but the story and lessons inside are still relevant because they're human. It's eery to see the parallels between then and now. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iCiVMngILEI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iCiVMngILEI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Thank you so much for the suggestion. I just finished watching this and it destroyed me emotionally. It makes me feel silly for ever shedding a tear for any other movie I've seen. This is also one more reason why Netflix streaming rocks so hard.
