This team has failed since replaced JVG. RA got lucky in his first year when team's defense still hold. Now? we keep bring RA's players , there is no defense at all. For DM, ture to be told, he wants to be the smartest guy and try to steal one superstar. But none of GMS in NBA will give him a chance. Maybe never.
There's also absolutely no guarantee that he would have resigned with us in the offseason. So we could have traded away Scola for nothing.
Yeah, this team has failed so badly since RA became coach. He hasn't had nearly the success that JVG had. Wait, which coach was actually able to win a freakin playoff series?
DM was shackled by a superstar who could neither play nor be traded. He seems to have done well with the hand he had...but circumstances will only trump .430 ball for so long. Honeymoon's not over. He has a couple of years. But he's on the clock now.
I'm very surprised DM is getting criticized as much as he is. I'm not sure how you can judge a GM's success by how many all-stars he can collect. He had 2 injury prone stars when he took over this team. He has been building this team to the best of his abilities since then. There's not much he can do when Dawson left this team in salary cap hell. He may be claiming that this team is not "rebuilding", but just look at the moves he's made.. I'm convinced that he IS INDEED rebuilding and retooling without wanting to admit it to the fan base. He's hoping that Jordan Hill, Pat Pat, Lee and maybe even T.Will live up to their expectations. He knows this team is in serious need of a true Center and an all-star - he's an MIT grad, he's not an idiot. We're not in Morey's office and we don't know the type of conversations that are taking place with other teams. Productive centers and allstars are a Premium in this league and there aren't very many that can be had, simply cuz they're just not available at this time and teams arent willing to trade them away. Instead of looking at what hasn't been able to deliver, take a look at the things he HAS done to make us more competitive in the upcoming years. He's cleared up A LOT of cap space that will make us much more competitive and even contenders in the upcoming years. There's no way we'd be able to compete with the Lakers, Spurs, Mavs, Celtics, Heat, Magic this year, and HE knows that, and you should have known that as well! Those teams are just an injury or 2 away from being like the Rockets-just look at the Mavs since they lost Dirk and Butler. The old players on those teams are not immortals.
DM didn't draft yao ming. He's been trying to build a team around a player that carol dawson chose. i think if DM had this team for all the years that CD had, it would be a lot better. Now that it is obvious that yao won't be the foundation any more, we can truly see what kind of team DM envisions. unfortunately it may take a couple of years to see that.
Who the hell here deifies Morey? I think some posters take the gazillion Morey-at-MSG photos too seriously. Most Morey-is-God posts, whether they be photos, photoshops, or one-line zingers, are done for fun rather than seriously. God forbid that some fans can go overboard a little when we get a GM who can grab players like Scola and Landry for peanuts. Especially when our previous GM kept overpaying the likes of Cato and Taylor, or trade 3 picks for Eddie Griffin when they don't even have a scouting report on the kid. If anything, fans who understand the way Morey works would know full well the limitations any GM has. And that Morey's results comes from hard work and due diligence, not because he actually pulls stuff out of his ass.
The only real issue I see is that the guy failed to get a legit, defensive-minded center and opted for Miller instead. His philosophy of "taking the most talented guy regardless of position" in the draft isn't a luxury that a team with no Center (or even a superstar Center who can never play) can afford. Parading (mostly undersized) PF out at Center is bad for one season but it's unforgiveable when you do it two seasons in a row. So now the team is overloaded with pretty good talent at four positions while being desperately depleted for the second year in a row at arguably the most important position on the court.
i am pretty much neutral when it comes to morey. he has made both good and bad decisions when it comes to the rockets organization. my expectations of morey were never extremely high though, because this guy used to be gm of the early 2000 boston celtics, and he helped run that team into the ground so..................................
Chris Wallace (currently the GM for the Grizzlies) was the GM in Boston from 97-07. Morey was in the front office, but was not the GM.
Two things about the Amare deal. First, the management has been blamed for holding on to a damaged 7'6" dude for too long. Now you got another guy who also had an injury history and they are blamed for not making the gamble? Second, we don't really know if Amare would leave us and bolt to NY like he did to the Suns. Who are the key free agents you are thinking about? LeBron? Bosh? I think it is pretty clear in today's NBA, FAs go to places they LIKE, not necessarily the teams with the best management. If you are blaming the management for making us a perpetual mediocre team, then, well, we are still waiting for the proverbial superstar. If you are blaming them for not considering how the good players fit together, I don't know how any management can do that in any foolproof way. The only sure way to know if a group of players can play well together is to let them play together. All you can do is to project and see if the skill sets of the players theoretically would fit well. What you really want for a good management is that they do their home work, make sound judgments, avoid dumb moves, and have a good overall plan. You can't expect them to not make mistakes when you are dealing with a commodity as uncertain as basketball players. Morey being deified is overboard. But overall, I think he is a very good GM. You can't just simply say "look at the product." The product is not totally controlled by the GM. A LOT OF LUCK is involved in this business. All you can do is maximize your odds, and I think that's what Morey has been doing. And you can also blame the city of Houston for not being one of those sexy destinations for the glamor-hungry breed of elite players.
Unfortunately, a lot of the posters here feel that if a move does not get you a superstar player, it is not a good basketball move.
who is chris wallace? that name sounds more like a 12th man roster player scrub name, than a sh!tty GM.
I think what set Morey back was Toronto's unwillingness to trade Bosh at last year's deadline. They should've know better than to think they could resign him when teams like Chicago / Miami / NJ were going to go hard after him as well, not to mention Bosh had shown no signs whatsoever that he would re-sign with the Raptors. We would've gladly given them Brooks / Landry / TMAC + multiple first round picks for Bosh + (2nd contract from Toronto to save them even more money). When Toronto held on to Bosh, our chances to do a sign and trade were probably no more than 1 % in the off season. Bosh had already made up his mind. Basically, Toronto screwed themselves and us by not trading Bosh. I'm glad at least Denver has learned from all this, and are going to get an A + deal for Melo. Sadly, we don't have as good a deal as NJ to offer. Our main incentive is just cap relief (through Yao), we just don't have that A + prospect (as Favors potentially is) to offer...
DM is one cool cat. He doesn't lose his composure, sticks to his game plan, evaluates the players well, see things log term and knows a thing or two about assets and liabilities. If a player doesn't fit he seems to correct the issue promptly and knows how how to build player value.Personally I couldn't ask for a better GM or owner. Most of you guys are ready to tank before the season starts or after the first losing streak. Most of you guys are always seeing the grass greener on the other side of the fence. Most of you guys couldn't get ur head out your butt. It's easy to be a arm chair coach or gm, to second guess, hind sight is always 20/20. DM hasn't given me any reason "NOT" to trust him. But I do know I sure wouldn't trust most of you running the team. In Daryl I Trust.
Who's blaming them for Yao? Not me. I dont think anyone could have predicted a Yao injury playing such limited minutes this year. I think you can look back and say that in hindsight, his minutes should have started being better managed years ago a la Rik Smits, Ilgauskus, Sabonis, and other players with comparable size in the NBA. Consistently putting him out there for 35mpg was probably not the best long term strategy.....but even then, its difficult to be too hard on the Rockets management on this point because like I said, no one could have truly anticipated the recurring injuries he's sustained over the past few years. Amare may have had an injury history, but he showed no effects of the injury during his time back. The circumstances were ideal: good player on a team looking to get some value for him rather than see him jet elsewhere. Scola + Battier for him would have been a steal. I've read so many posters say that 'he would have left us for NY anyways.' Where's your proof? he signed with the team that paid him the most. This was not a situation of collusion like Bosh. Also, not a single report makes mention of him jetting after the season as the reason the trade didnt go down, rather it was the physical that consistently got cited. No, I'm talking about guys like Gortat, Dampier, and Rashard Lewis. Gortat settled on being a backup in Orlando to coming to Houston. And FAs dont go to places they merely LIKE....they go to teams that are the most attractive to them and are able to sell themselves to the player. The decisions are made on a variety of factors, primarily money, roster talent, city, etc. Let me be clear: I dont think Morey is a bad GM. In fact, I think he's one of the best. But right now you have Martin, Brooks, Lowry, Lee, Budinger, Battier, Williams, and occasionally Ish Smith. It's simply too many players at the gaurd positions, and almost every night there's a guy who could have, and in many instances, should have, gotten more playing time.
I don't blame Morey for our recent troubles. Although, we could have had Amare, Iguodala and Dalembert on our team.
