Many of you know that a lot of states are going to require you to have a hands free device in order to use a cell phone while driving. The problem is that these devices don't work with all phones and can be expensive. A guy has found a hands free device which works with all phones and costs just a few pennies. Let's see if this works...the new, cheap, universal hands free device... I'm personally buying a bunch of them...I hate it when my expensive device breaks...which happens a lot.
The irony is that studies have found that people are still far more likely to end up in an accident with the hands-free phones than without any phone. The problem is that, when you are carrying on a conversation, it is difficult to concentrate on the road. In one magazine (Time I think?), a study found that the problem appears to be the two-way nature of conversations. Unlike music where there is just listening or singing along, a two-way conversation requires greater concentration and results in much more dangerous driving conditions. I was just thinking the other day, how in the world did we manage when we didn't have cell phones? I understand the convenience of stopping for directions or letting someone know you're stuck in traffic. I see the benefit of emergency situations. But, for casual conversation??? Seems pretty unnecessary.
One problem is that so many people are using their time stuck in traffic to use their cell phone to conduct business. I can't blame them for not anting to stay at the office another hour or so when they can finish their business on the road...hang up the phone and poof...be home.
And for these reasons we should also outlaw passengers in cars because they might initiate a conversation with the driver. Oooo....notre dame's in the nickle...
