If Thomas signs with Chicago, we probably have no chance at Fizer

Doc Rocket mentioned in another thread that the Rockets had made some pursuit of Fizer. He would be a very valuable addition to the Rockets, especially if our Thomas plays at all like he did in the Revue.

But if Tim Thomas signs for the max in Chicago, as NBATalk and others are reporting, then Chicago will probably get 2 of the 3 guys they were after. They could still get Jones, somehow.

But the story has been that Jermaine Oneal, Tim Thomas and Tracy McGrady wanted to play together someday, and this was the strategy behind Chicago's drafting, wheeling and dealing. After August 1st, Oneal will be more tradeable, and people are saying that Chicago will send Fizer and Crawford to Portland for Oneal, and possibly Barkely.

If Portland wants Fizer and Crawford, Chicago will probably give them to them to get Oneal, so that will probably end any negotiations with the Rockets for Fizer. I'm sure the negotiations have been, that in case they don't put the deal together with Portland, they might want Cato instead. So, if Chicago signs EJ, they'll have a decent team. Not as good if Hill, Duncan, or McGrady had signed, but a good team, nonetheless.

Why would Chicago give Thomas the MAX? So they can get Oneal. He's critical to them recapturing their FA goofs.

    Oneal/Tarlac/Voskull/Dabaric
    Brand/Ruffin
    Thomas/Artest
    Jones/Hawkins/Benjamin
    Barkley/El-Amin/Guyton

So, if the Thomas rumors are true, as much as I'd like to get Fizer, I don't think it's happening. On to chasing Mobely (I really hope all this posturing is to disuade the NBA that a deal was stuck behind the scenes), Lewis, Croshere, and Jerome Williams.

Why would Portland be interested in Fizer so much? They are already stacked at PF position.
Another thing, Chicago would be crazy to do the Oneal+Barkley for Fizer+Crawford deal...
Oneal is really not a true center in this league and they certainly can't play him at PF (Brand)
Cato for Fizer might make sense for both teams but then we lose our center...unless we are thinking of next year's draft crop...but that's no guarantee...
it'll be interesting to see what folds down after August 1st regarding the Fizer situation.

    Hakola --

I can't believe I had never thought of that until you brought it up. I was just assuming the Bulls might want O'Neal over Cato, but why would the Blazers want Fizer? They're trying to re-sign Brian Grant. Even if they don't (zero chance of that, IMO), they've got Wallace. I don't see how O'Neal ends up in Chicago in a Fizer trade, unless it's a precursor to another deal.

Well, last year, Brian Grant was still able to get a decent amount of minutes with Rwall playing the pf. NOw, Grant will leave Portland, and Fizer will take his minutes. Fizer is a rookie, so he wont be demanding 30 minutes a game or anything. Portland might just want to bring Fizer up slowly with the guidance of veterans like Pip and Steve Smith.

And Fizer will be better than Grant too, and he can cause more mismatch problems with his long range also.

Another aspect to consider in this Fizer+Crawford for O'Neal saga is that O'Neal has stated publically that he doesn't want to play the Center position, he sees himself as a PF and that's what he wants to play. All this said, I don't possibly see how O'Neal could be happy going to Chicago to play Center when there are plenty of other teams who he could start at PF for. I know that he doesn't have a trade veto clause in his contract, but no team wants to bring an unhappy player with a bad attitude into the fold. I would love for this deal to fall through. Then towards the end of the summer, the Bulls will get desparate in trying to trade Fizer and maybe we can make a deal to put him in a Rocks uniform.
