I almost didn't want to put this here in D & D but I am guessing if I had it would end here. More power to Steve Buckley and its too bad that he had to struggle with whether to do this or not. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...tswriter-comes-out-in-column-010611?gt1=39002 Gay sportswriter comes out in column A Boston Herald sportswriter held a “coming-out party” in his column Thursday when he revealed to readers that he is gay. Steve Buckley, 56, revealed that he has battled with the idea of coming out in one of his stories for years, writing, “I haven’t been fair to my family, my friends or my co-workers. And I certainly haven’t been fair to myself.” Buckley wrote that his mother had set him on a course for revealing his sexuality seven years ago, but a family tragedy intervened. “Just over seven years ago, before Thanksgiving, we were getting into the car outside of a CVS when my mother said, “I think you should go ahead and do that story you’ve been talking about,” Buckley writes. “Really?” “Yes,” she said. “Just go ahead and do it. And then we’ll have a party.” “She was talking about the story in which I would say that I am gay,” writes Buckley. But shortly after returning from a week-long vacation, the point at which Buckley intended to write the coming-out column, his mother died after suffering a heart attack. Years passed as Buckley struggled to find the resolve to make the announcement his mother had encouraged him to put on paper until, he writes, stories of gay men and women committing suicide guided him “to the belief that if more people are able to be honest about who they are, ultimately fewer people will feel such devastating pressure.” “For too many years I’ve been on the sidelines of Boston’s gay community but not in the game -- figuratively and literally, as I feel I would have had a pretty good career in the (gay) Beantown Softball League,” Buckley quips. “It’s my hope that from now on I’ll be more involved,” he writes. “I’m not really sure what I mean by being 'involved,' but this is a start: I’m gay.” Buckley has been a regularly featured sports columnist for the Herald since 1995. He is the author of several books including “Wicked Good Year,” which details the 2007 seasons of the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics.
Good for him. A really brave thing to do in any situation, but especially when you consider the line of work he is in.
Yay for gay people feeling more and more free as time progresses! 100 years from now, folks will look back and scratch their head as to why our society was so oppressive to gay people.
Don't worry . . . they will have their own minority to oppress. Rocket River "Man, they were so barbaric to gays back then .. . I mean it is not like they were like these disgusting nasty need to be killed filthy ewoks!!! " - Future Folx
Why write an entire article about yourself coming out? Does this change anything? Who really gives a ****? Journalists are supposed to report the news, not make it. You can be as gay as you want to be, more power to you. But I don't know why the need to shout it from a mountaintop so that we all have to know. Thanks for bringing us this hard hitting sports news, Steve Buckley!
Unfortunately there are so many idiots that coming out as gay is such a rare thing for public figures because of the fear of backlash that is indeed news.
I don't know how I feel about this without more information. Did he vote for Bagwell to get into the Hall of Fame? If so, I think this takes braver, andI hope this makes him happier and more fulfilled. If not, damn queer needs to have his keyboard stolen.
I'm glad he feels comfortable coming out, but writing an article about it seems weird to me. I would think that people read his column to get his opinion on sports, not to find out details about his personal life. Unless he's always included a lot of personal details (family anecdotes, etc.) in his stories, in which case I guess this makes sense.
I mean I applaud the guy for admitting it publicly, but then I think, so what? I would prefer people keep their sexual preferences to themselves, it is no one else's business. DD
good for him ... but I agree with other that said "who cares?" its his personal life why write about it to the world and especially in a sports column?
