As some of you may know, I'm 16, a minor. Lately, I've been getting some e-mails advertising cigarettes for some cheap price, or something like that. My e-mail address is completely different than my dads. I don't know much about e-mail addresses, so I don't know if there is a place for age, but anyway my point is would this be advertising cigarettes to a minor? Isn't that illegal, or something? Maybe not since magazines have some, but maybe those are made for older people. Just a question.

BTW, my dad e-mailed them saying I was a minor. :p

edit: i'm also getting viagra and phentermine emails. I KNOW I'm not sending for this stuff. :D

I don't know about the illegal side of it, but if you have a Yahoo or Hotmail type account, the company that gives you the e-mail account often sells your email address to these people.

I get mail on how to control my hot-flashes. I don't think they know very much about who they are spamming.

I have a regular e-mail account, not one over the web. But I wouldn't doubt that they do that, though.

anytime you submit your e-mail address in registering for anything on the web (fantasy football, ability to read newspapers online, online shopping, etc), you are subjecting yourself to receive spam.

If you try the "remove my name from this spam list", you are just subjecting yourself to more spam from different companies.

its a huge conspiracy to flood our inboxes with as much advertising as possible. and i'm dead serious.

I just wonder how effective the spam actually is...... I mean I sure wouldn't buy products from someone who spams me.... but I guess enough people do that it is effective?

My advice: start smoking, and when you get lung cancer, take the cigarette company to court and win $28billion! jk :D

Really, I delete EVERYTHING in my Inbox which:

    a) isn't from someone I know

    b) isn't something I'm expecting (documents etc...)

    c) has the word 'sex', 'penis enlargement', 'breast enlargement', 'hollywood whores', 'vagina', 't*tties', 'HOT SEX!!!!', 'young virgins', 'old virgins', 'animal and virgins', 'virgins and virgins', 'hot threesomes', 'c*m c*m c*m', 'backdoor', 'oral', 'positions you've never thought possible' and other things that may look dodgy.

Well, I rarely submit my e-mail anywhere. I don't do fantasy sports, I don't give it out to read news, no online shopping. I've given it out maybe 5 or 6 times at the MOST. However, I know what you mean. But I'm not really worried about the spam, because like I said I have plenty of mail that shouldn't be there. (kind of like what StupidMoniker said.) I was just wondering if anyone sees a problem with them advertising cigarettes to a minor.

sure i think its wrong. just like i think its wrong that i get all this nasty spam with sexual innuendos... but i live with it.

but most "spammers" don't have your personal info, only a HUGE list of e-mail addresses. Therefore, they just randomly send junk out.

Oh, and the worst way to get spam is to fill out those "registration cards" either by hand or electronically whenever you buy a product. You know how they ask for your "interests" when you check boxes next to items like "arts & crafts", "sports", etc. Well the only reason for that is to target what kind of spam you will receive. If they see you checked that you are a male, than you will receive lots of sexual related spam, b/c well that's what males want!
    ;)

i stopped filling out registration cards years ago.

    So...can I like...sue them? :D J/k.

I was just kind of suprised they would be advertising that. I've seen uh...that pill..and "wild" tapes on TV. But no cigarette commercials, which I believe is against the law to do on TV. BTW, is advertising tobacco to a minor illegal? Thought I may have heard that. Maybe not.

This thread gets my vote for worst thread of the year, narrowly edging out "Did you ever use the Rockets in your school work" and the ever popular "Would you do this trade?"

This is why you need a netscape/hotmail/yahoo.etc email account. Register for sites with that, never check it. Empty the trash once a month.

or you can use spamgourmet... its fantastic! gives you unlimited dummy e-mail accounts that forward the mail to your actual account for 'x' number of times, than the forwarding address just gets deleted. (You specify the number for 'x')...

    cuts down on spam majorly!

Htownhero....youy got email from Jen AND Jennifer? Wow, creative use of names on that p*rn spam.

RCCola....I made the mistake of giving Camel my address when I was wasting my time hitting on the Camel girl (last Yager night EVER) at Ernie's on Banks a few years back. Now I dont just get email from tobacco companies, but great publications like Camel Monthly.

Beware of Yahoo Fantasy Football, they pimp you out big time.
