You might need to re-watch that movie again and paid a little closer attention between her and the alien's conversation. The first time I saw that movie I felt the same way but after watching it over and understanding the reason why it became one of my all time favorite movie. Knowing Indiana Jones 4(actually the movie suck throughout but the ending is icing on the cake) I Am Legend(actually the movie start sucking when he met the woman) Castaway Signs Sunshine Return of the Jedi(fcking Ewoks) No Country For Old Men(I need a re-watch)
As a defender on No Country For Old Men, my favorite movie ever, I will explain why it was very hard for them to make that movie and not have it end the way it did, without straying too far from the source material. The scene where he goes to that old dudes house with the wheelchair and all the cats, was a much larger part of the book. That scene was probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire book. They go off on war stories, regrets in their life, all kinds of weird stuff. In the movie they had three choices on how to handle this part of the book: They could film them telling all these stories, actually film their narrative and show the war stories, etc., or they could do what they did and shorten it considerably. They decided to cut this out and put it into a 10 minute or so scene. When he is talking about his dad at the end and the fire and everything from his dream, you don't know his dad as well as you do in the book because that was a huge topic in that meeting with the old dude. The Coen brothers were put in a spot, even if they put themselves in the spot by choosing the source material, to where the ending was set up to sort of be a dud. With the exception of the cut down scene, the book could almost be considered the script because they followed it so closely. I was amazed how they could still put their weird little Coen brothers humor in that movie by following the book's lead. They created things that probably not intentional by Cormac McCarthy, yet still fit the story without altering it. I thought it was beautifully done, yet was a complete reimagining for me from the book. If you can't tell, I love the movie, and the book. I suggest you read it if you haven't. It will make you appreciate the ending more.
I think I know the ending pretty well. The alien took the form of her Dad on the beach in Florida so the ordeal would be easier for her to comprehend. While that makes sense to me, I was really hoping for something better, because the rest of the movie was outstanding IMO. I know that the alien wasn't really her Dad, but I was hoping for more. If I'm missing something, please give me your take.
Yeah, but if they'd actually put a three-eyed alien creature there at the end, it would have transformed the entire movie from being a vision of what humanity would be like if we'd make contact.... to a sci-fi alien creature film. With this in mind, I think it was a very good idea to end it the way they did.
True, but something in the middle is what I was hoping for. I didn't want to see Predator waiting to greet her, but maybe something similar to what greeted Ed Harris in the Abyss would've been better. Just my opinion though. I guess to say the movie was "ruined" is a bit strong. It's still one of my favorite movies because of everything leading up to her Vega visit.
Since there is so much talk about Contact going on...I always wondered, why didn't they send someone else through the machine? It's like they just gave up. They didn't say the machine was damaged or inoperable in anyway...send more folks through to verify Jodi Foster's observations. Bah.
Whoa dude, you need to watch the end of Castaway again--great ending that brings the movie full circle. In fact, it's one of the BETTER endings for a big budget Hollywood flick, IMHO
You are the minority I guess. No Country for Old Men sucked!! And LOST was good! I agree with treerollins
several movies won best picture. . that I thought sucked My Left Foot and The Piano . . .come to mind just plain boring Rocket River
I was hoping for that too but I have grown to understand that if they did come up with an intelligent look of a certain species and might not live up to people's expectation. I think it would be too easy if things are being reveal or given to us. At the very moment we as a human specie aren't ready to accept the responsibility and we are still a long way to go until we are accepted into the circle of the high order of intelligent species if there is such a kind and I do believe there are.
I completely disagree with you. The last shot is of him standing at the intersection of roads, trying to decide.. "Should I go back to the wings-logo lady, or should I take the other road and start my life again?"....... .....and that's it. It leave's it hanging there, like we're supposed to fill in the blanks ourselves. Well, ya know what? THAT'S NOT STORY TELLING. That's like saying "Once upon a time.... well.... you figure out the rest." ... actually, it's WORSE to build characters and a plot, and have development and then leave the end off. One of the most annoying things a movie can do is to tell a compelling story and then cut off the end to let the viewer decide what the ending should be. F THAT!!!
I totally disagreed. I find most interesting and well done movies usually leaves open ending and it makes for good debating. I hate movies that think we are stupid and have to fill in every single thing. For instance Inception. If the ending is that he's in the real world and he's with his children. I find it's no longer that interesting. I have no problem with movies that leave open ending but it's for a reasonable reason that still make it a complete movie.
That is the ending, but only once you watch the movie multiple times to figure out the wedding ring on his finger proves he's not dreaming and the ending was a Hollywood/happy one.
