So I've been looking for a cool, quiet coffee shop/hangout spot that's open late (past midnight) and is suitable for a post-dinner/movies conversation over coffee. In college station there are a bunch of places like this (Eugene's, hastings, etc...) but I am yet to find one like that here in Houston. The one I've been going to has been the 24 hour starbucks in the galleria area, but I absolutely hate it considering the number of absolute weirdos who frequent that coffee shop, and by weirdos I mean seriously deranged people. Example: last week the manager asked an old homeless guy who's been sleeping on the couch to leave because he is smelling up the place. When he got up, there was doodoo stains down his pants, no lie. So here's what I'm looking for: 1. nice quiet suitable environment 2. opens past midnight 3. in or around southwest Houston. Or anything on westheimer. As long as it's not in downtown. any suggestions?
Velero Gas stations.... Open 24/7 homie!!! They even have a picnic table on the side, so you can sit and chill and ****....
Don't know if it's what you're looking for, but Agora is an awesome coffee/wine/beer place. Edit: it's in Montrose, so not close to SW Houston.
They close at 10 during the week and 11 on weekends. I like that place, but they close too early. Nearby Brasil is too loud. If anyone does have a good recommendation for the OP (but inside the loop), I'd love to hear it.
Inversion Coffee off of Montrose. Taft Street Coffee Shop (Also home to Ecclesia) Agora was cool until it went up in flames.
wrt Agora, they are in the midst of rebuilding. It didn't actually burn all the way down; the antique store next door did. Looks like it will be back. Brasil won't be too loud after midnight. Note that most places open past midnight are going to serve beer and wine, too, so it will be more than a coffee crowd, and likely have occasional music/poetry/etc. Brasil also has two outdoor covered patios, as well, so on music nights you can go outside. They have a pretentious wait staff that you have to get used to, though. Another open past midnight (2am) is Onion Creek, on 6th Street in the Heights.
Brasil is a good choice, but you just have to make sure you're going on a night with no music... Boheme is not too far away either - open until 2am from Tuesday-Saturday and until Midnight on Sunday & Monday Also, it's not quite downtown (more like midtown, I guess) but Khon's Wine Darts Coffee Art is a good spot. Antidote up on Studewood in the Heights is nice too, except they close at midnight. Waldo's is cool as well, but they close at 11. Generally, it's tough to find a good coffee shop that's open that late.
Agora is almost completely rebuilt from the outside, I don't know what it looks like inside. Probably will be reopening in a few months. Looks like a totally different area without the antique shop next door. Like someone else said, empire closes at 10 on week nights- I was there last night. Bohemeos is pretty good too, but not in SW Houston. The Starbucks in the Galleria is always open, but don't expect to get anything done there- it's always loud.
There isn't anything in College Station that Houston doesn't do better... except handout MIPs. http://theloopscoop.com/category/coffee-shops
Just wanted to throw in Minuti as a great coffee shop in Houston -- there's one in Sugar Land, and one downtown. Fantastic coffee in stylish and comfortable surroundings. The one downtown is open pretty late, and everyone there is really friendly.
Petrol is a good spot, though it turns into more of a bar at night. They are open late and serve amazing burgers. It's in the Heights though, so maybe too far for you. http://www.yelp.com/biz/petrol-station-houston
